In opposition to health care, Corbett has a fundraising tool

State Attorney General Tom Corbett and his supporters have steadfastly insisted that there’s nothing political about his decision to join in a lawsuit challenging the legality of newly-enacted health care reform legislation. But that doesn’t mean his opposition to the law isn’t being used to boost Corbett’s gubernatorial hopes.

Indeed, Corbett’s campaign has already cited the lawsuit in at least one fundraising e-mail. And a fundraising letter obtained by pa2010.com further illuminates how Corbett is highlighting his stance on health care reform to raise money.

In the four-page letter—which is undated but the campaign says was written and circulated before the recent federal legislation was passed and before Corbett joined other state attorneys general in the lawsuit—Corbett writes that he’s “100% opposed to President Barack Obama’s plans to impose government-run, socialized medicine and Pennsylvania and her citizens.”

Corbett adds: “Unlike my liberal Democratic opponents who supported Ed Rendell, President Obama, and their big-government agenda, I want you to know that I am firmly, unequivocally on your side in this fight.”

Disclosure of the letter comes with Democrats showing no sign of relenting in their criticism of Corbett. The state Democratic Party, clearly believing the health care lawsuit has given the party its best opportunity to paint Corbett as politically compromised, was set to hand-deliver a petition to Corbett’s office Tuesday. The party said 2,126 voters signed the petition calling on Corbett to drop the lawsuit.

“In joining this baseless lawsuit, it is increasingly difficult for you to claim that your motives are anything but political,” state party chairman T.J. Rooney wrote in a letter to be delivered with the petition. “While your political campaign is your own, the office you currently occupy belongs to the people of Pennsylvania. By politicizing your office, you are exploiting the people you claim to serve.”

How to interpret the timing of Corbett’s fundraising letter is a matter of some debate; while Republicans will say it means Corbett has been consistent in his opposition to the health care reform legislation, Democrats are framing it as evidence that Corbett’s political aspirations and his duties as Attorney General are becoming increasingly overlapped.

In an interview with pa2010.com on Tuesday, Corbett campaign manager Brian Nutt insisted it was Democrats who are politicizing the issue, pointing to the threat by state House Appropriations Committee chairman Dwight Evans to cut the budget for Corbett’s office if he doesn’t drop the lawsuit.

“Partisan Democrats are going to continue beating the drum on this,” Nutt said. “At the end of the day, Tom Corbett is looking out for the interests of Pennsylvanians.”

So the real reason comes out. Corbett wants to deny sick kids medical care and raise prescription costs on seniors, all so he can get a few more bucks in this campaign war chest. This guy is despicable.

Corbitt’s looking out for Pennsylvanian’s by denying them and their children healthcare? Just more lunacy from the GOP. Thanks but no thanks Tom. Will they waste more money on this nuisance lawsuit than Corbitt will collect in contrubutions?

I support Tom in his opposition to this bill. Every candidate from every political fragment uses mistakes their opponents have to fundraise, and this is no different. The point of this entire matter is that Corbett doesn’t like the bill and that is the real matter here. This bill is evidenced to cost huge amounts of money not just to the taxpayers but to many American businesses as well. We don’t want anyone getting sick in this country, and to say that Corbett is attacking this bill so kids will get sick and his campaign can get rich is preposterous. Say that back to yourself and you’ll realize how absurd a claim that is. We’ll see just how despicable his actions are when it costs every last citizen of Pennsylvania more money to pay for less care.

Corbett’s participation in the lawsuit is well timed for his campaign, but it doesn’t change the fact that what the government is doing is wrong, and Corbett is doing what he can. To think that allowing the Gov’t to control 17% of GDP will not be challenged legally is ludicrous.

The real political opportunism is coming from the Dem’s. Jumping on Corbett for doing what half of the other states are doing (and all should be) is politicizing an situation.

How dare Corbett deny people in PA a handout! Everyone in PA I know wants to be forced to accept ObamaCare or face a fine/imprisonment! He is clearly out of touch with blue state PA! We need Joe Hoeffel now more than ever!

Regulation is not the same as a government takeover. There is no public option; it’s all still PRIVATE insurance. The health care reform legislation is simply bringing capitalism to an anti-competitive market, which will reduce costs and increase access to quality, affordable health care.

To those of you who say that this is going to raise costs and premiums – how about you cite some studies or reports rather than just your gut feeling. I’m calling shenanigans. The nonpartisan CBO, among other organizations, has found that the health care legislation will reduce costs, increase access, and reduce the deficit while creating millions of jobs over the next couple of decades.

    re Greg K.

private insurance that is mandated and controlled by the gov’t. Forcing a private business to offer a product kind of takes the private out of it and puts the “public good” ahead of private enterprise. Hence a government controlled enterprise.

And how is forcing the public to buy a product capitalism? That seems pretty government controlled to me. This does not give us a single payer system….yet. What is Pelosi’s and Obama’s ultimate goal? To control healthcare, there is a reason they are happy with this current bill….one step at a time

In response to Greg and his statement about the non-partisan CBO. Nancy Pelosi had to use some serious budgetary gimmicks to get the numbers she wanted. You will not find a credible expert that can say that the CBO numbers accurately reflect the true cost of health care in the next 20 years. You can read more about this below in the WaPo article and in about 20 other articles from very reputable sources. Note that the deficit being reduced is simply more money being supplied to the government from increased taxes.

Also, the notion that this bill will create jobs is absolutely absurd. I don’t even think the politicians have attempted to make that connection. Why? You can’t. The only thing this bill has done is to create greater uncertainty in the marketplace thus decreasing economic recovery during one of the greatest recessions we have ever seeen.

Once again, how about you provide your own sources and evidence backing up your claims? All I’m seeing is baseless speculation and regurgitated talking points.

And that Washington Post article hardly debunks my statement – it’s just stating the obvious: predicting the future isn’t easy or 100% accurate.

And I’m not going to sit here and explain the basics of economics and political science to you guys. Take some initiative and pick up a book.

Mindlessly parroting what Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh told you is no way to go through life.

It’s really a tragedy how painfully uninformed so many voters are today, especially considering the amount of information available and the ease of access.

For all it’s good intent, the health care legislation; is taking away States rights and duty to care for their citizens. It’s all about control
and power. We can’t let our President drag our country further and further into debt.

Greg, you keep complaining about people not providing sources, yet you haven’t provided one fact or source of your own. You claim you can defend your position by explaining basics of political science (i’m not sure how the basics of political science are relavent) and economics. Yet, you still hold to your statement that the health care bill will create jobs. I’m open to an argument. Because it is a debate that should be had. But just pointing fingers and trying to insult people’s intelligence without defending your own claim of knowledge and intelligence with a substantial argument is the real ‘tragedy.’

Stop projecting your own weakness. Basics in economics are neccessary to understand how these things work. Being current on the legislation, its content and its programs is also, perhaps even more, neccessary. You have shown nothing to prove that you are up to date on such things. I do not claim to be an expert. But if I am one thing, I am very informed.

If you look at entitlements, historically they are always much much more expensive then projected. If you ask any business group, they will explain to you that this job is not helping the economy. It was not intended to do so. If that were the case, the Democrats in Congress would not need to pass any more ‘stimulus’ legislation.

Again, I welcome a debate. Your unfounded accusations and ignorant statements do not support your position. If you want to make a point: bring facts, bring sources. Leave the rhetoric to those who know how to use it.

Greg, you have not provided one source or fact that supports your claims. You claim to have a solid understanding of political science and economics. Yet, you continue to defend your position that this bill creates jobs, even when this was not its intent. It will instead increase taxes on individuals and businesses. Tell me, what capitalist economic model explains that increasing taxes on business and individuals creates more jobs.

You continue to claim that this will reduce the deficit. Historically, this is absolutely not true. All entitlement programs have ballooned far beyond their projected costs. Economimsts (projecting) say that this program will do the same thing. Now, I am no expert. If you are and you have an argument against this please explain. In the mean time, below is another WaPo article for your reading pleasure. I really encourage you to read it: I can tell you will learn quite a bit: about political science and economics.

Attorney General Corbett has indeed been consistent on the issue of Obamacare. The fact is that the Democratic Party pushed for an unconstitutional, expensive healthcare plan that most of Americans do not want. The democrats have no one to blame for the timing of this bill, but their own ruthless push. As Attorney General, Tom Corbett has a duty to defend the people of Pennsylvania from the unconstitutional and unfair demands of legislative acts like Obamacare.
Perhaps the most disturbing party of this episode is the push by democratic lawmakers to punish Attorney General Corbett by cutting his office budget. The Attorney General is elected by the people to protect them in times like this. When lawmakers try o manipulate elected officials in this way, it shows just how little respect there is for a balance of powers. If democrats are permitted to do this, it will give a dangerous precedent; allowing the legislative branch to manipulate what cases are investigated, and which cases go to trial. This attitude is exactly what Corbett has had to fight against in the “bonusgate” scandal. It is good to know that we have an attorney General who is not intimidated by threats from legislators who are anxious to eliminate all opposition and concentrate all power to themselves.

Why isn’t Corbett saying anything about proposed single payer legislation currently before the PA General Assembly? He just seems to be using the same old, same old buzz words like socialized and government take over. These words are only meant to divide and take away real, healthy debate. What is wrong with us just sitting down and peeling away the buzz words and looking at all sides of an issue with common respect? I can respect a person running to represent me who honestly disagrees, but I cannt respect a person who just wants to use division as a tool to get ahead. Seems Corbett is just one more trying to do this.

Let me give you the facts about HB 16660 & SB 400, in both chambers of the PA General Assembly. Then I will give you the website where you can check out the facts yourself. Then if you have further questions you can ask them. If you still agree I respect that. But please do not use the same old buzz words to disagree.

Unlike the VA medical system where the medical staff are employees of the government & the facilities are owned by the government which makes it a socialized system, a single payer system is not. The word single payer means that all the funds go into a single pot and come out of a single pot, thus the word single. The medical staff and facilities are private. The funding comes from everyone; thus the words privately delivered, publically funded.

I was the lead researcher in a study done on every taxing body in our Commonwealth. We used the Open Records Act to get the actual numbers from all the municipalities, school districts, county governments and the state itself. We wanted to know how much each would save on employee health care costs under the proposed single payer legislation. What we found was that $2.3 BILLION was the total savings to the PA taxpayers. Look at the study at http://www.healthcare4allpa.org. Click on the Resources tab, then taxpayer savings. Scroll down the page to click on your county to get a detailed look.

HealthCare4All PA is a group of citizens who want our government to stop wasting our money trying to patchwork health care reform. We believe that every person should have health care, after all everyone is already paying in some way through some tax or higher premium for others. Our current system is very expensive because of this patchwork. We believe in honest and respectful dialogue.

The legislation has support from both sides of the isle in both chambers. Senate Resolution 247 has the signatures of 34 of our 50 senators. The resolution will provide funding for a study that will prove or disprove the economics of this legislation. If you are someone who is tired of all the rhetoric from both political parties, call the three Senate leaders who can see this study move forward. They are Dominic Pileggi at 717-787-4712,Don White at 717-787-8724 and John Pippy at 717-787-5839.

Corbett’s campaign director is quoted in the Phila. Daily News today as saying the next steps will be the government telling us what car to buy, and what color shingles to have on our roofs. How stupid do Corbett and his staff think voters are? Here’s a bill that insures millions of new Americans, lowers the debt, and puts us on a course to lower health care costs. What part of that do they want to give back?

Check the facts. Corbett’s party in Washington set out to make this issue Obama’s Waterloo. It’s politics, politics, politics. It didn’t work. Stop the silly season now!
