Construction unions back O’Brien in 11th (Updated)

Lackawanna County Commissioner Corey O’Brien got the first labor endorsements of his congressional campaign Wednesday, when construction unions in the county backed him over incumbent Democrat Paul Kanjorski.

The Northeastern Pennsylvania Building & Constructions Trades Council and the Scranton Building and Construction Trades Council, which together represent about 10,000 workers, both gave their support to O’Brien’s primary challenge.

“We know that Corey will fight for our region to ensure that our local workers have good-paying jobs right here at home,” Mike Rozitski, president of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council, said in a campaign statement.

Kanjorski spokesman Ed Mitchell noted to a local newspaper that some of the council’s member unions have been significant contributors to Kanjorski.

“Once again, O’Brien is, as they say in Texas, all hat and no cattle,” Mitchell said.

O’Brien faces an uphill battle against a well-funded incumbent who remains popular within his own party, but has been working hard to make the argument that he’s more electable in November.
