A trip to Camden County
While many Lincoln Day dinners were recently rescheduled because of the “blizzard-like conditions” in the area, there was one that went on as scheduled, and without a hitch: the Camden County GOP Lincoln Day dinner.
Suburban Snapshot ventured across the bridge into South Jersey for a productive and fun evening, despite the blizzard, to see what the excitement was all about. In a state that is overwhelmingly Democratic, it was terrific being with a group of passionate Republicans who believe this is going to be their year—first with a Chris Christie victory and next with a Jon Runyan congressional election.
Because of Runyan’s departure from football and entrance into the political arena, the Camden County Republicans are psyched about Election Day. They really believe someone with the gravitas and persona like Runyan can beat incumbent Democrat John Adler.
Hearing Runyan speak politically for the first time, I was struck with his sardonic sense of humor—a very dry wit. He is also a man who can think fast on his feet. And Runyan says he’s no politician, but can work a room with the best of them. Everyone there got a few minutes with the former Philadelphia Eagle, but they weren’t talking sports. They were talking about the greatest contact sport around—politics. Runyan is ready, armed, and from what I saw, he could bring the next victory in New Jersey.
For people who are not familiar with the New Jersey government, it is different from Pennsylvania. Where we have state representatives, they have assemblymen; where we have county commissioners, they have freeholders. It’s a bit different.
But what is not different is the passion, and the great people that are involved. Even though I was not from the area, Camden County GOP chairman Rick DeMichele graciously welcomed me to the group, and introduced me around.
What goes on across the bridge does have a tangential effect on southeastern Pennsylvania, so that’s why we should all start to learn more about our “Garden State” Republican neighbors.
