A seniority boost for Specter
Senator Arlen Specter on Thursday got back a little bit of the seniority he lost when he switched parties last year.
The Post-Gazette reports that Specter “leapfrogged” six senators on the Judiciary Committee and moved up in the legislative mark-up process. Specter told the newspaper it’s all part of the plan to end up with the same senior ranking he’d have if he had been elected as a Democrat in 1980. Specter still ranks behind several Democrats on the Appropriations Committee, which he used to chair, and is also eyeing a move up the ladder on the powerful Appropriations Committee.
“There’s more to come,” he said.
Despite Specter’s claim that Majority Leader Harry Reid had promised he could keep his seniority when he defected to the Democrats last April, Specter was relegated to junior status shortly after. In May, he confidently told pa2010.com, “I’m going to get it back.”
“There are a few bumps in the road,” he said. “But I’ve got good shock absorption.”

Senator Specter is a venerable, venerated public figure who has enjoyed an illustrious career. Representative Sestak, meanwhile, makes unsubstantiated accusations against the Democratic President of the United States, pays his impoverished staff minimum wage, and befriends degenerate freak Congressmen who grope the gentials of innocent people. Stark contrast indeed.

Rick (or is it Richard when you actually use your name here?) — Specter now gets the seniority as a Democrat without needing a Democratic history. In effect, what the party bosses are saying is that he gets a pass for supporting Reagan, Bush I, Bush II, Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, the Iraq War, DOMA, and countless attacks against American citizens rights to privacy.
How convenient.
Sadly for him, grassroots Democrats – the ones who actually cast votes in a primary – will not be so forgiving.

Bruce-
He gets a pass for opposing Bork, supporting Ginsberg and Sotomayor, supporting pro-choice and stem cell research, minimum wage increases, and, oh yeah, the stimulus vote. (plus he’s got 30 years experience and is a powerful senator)
Since you are going to get Specter anyway, wouldn’t it be better for Pennsylvania if he had his seniority?
Bruce, all those suburban Jewish Dems who voted for Specter when he was a Republican are going to flock to the poles to welcome Arlen as a Dem.

That’s great news, Dave. If they flock to the poles, they’ll be busy with penguins and Eskimos while the rest of us are voting!

On a serious note, though – has anyone ever done a breakdown of what percentage of SEPA Dems are Jewish? Not that every single one would support Specter, but I’m sure he has a good following among this segment of Democrats.

Bruce-
It’s enough to have won Specter elections. A lot of them switched to Rep in 2004 to vote for him in that very close primary. My Jewish friends are very liberal, and very pro-Israel, and they planning to vote for Specter.
“penguins and Eskimos”???
Actually, it’s Joe who has been courting the wrong demographic, a demographic that won’t be there for him on election day.

I am not the poster who uses the “hate Sestak” label, my opinions are reasonable enough (even if you disagree with them) so that I do not need to hide behind an alias.
I wouldn’t bring the “assault on privacy” into the discussion given Sestak’s vote on FISA. Didn’t the uniform give him enough political cover so that he didn’t have to be afraid of being smeared as “soft on terrorism”? Or was he trying to make up for his ill-advised appearance at the CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) event? Now there’s a group quite soft on terrorism, with monetary links to some real bad actors (Hamas).

Come on Rick/Richard – Sure you are. There are sworn statements. Reporters have all the evidence. It’s going to be in the newspapers any day now. It’s quite the scandal.
Dave – Poles (north and south) are where penguins and eskimos live. Polls are where people vote.

What the f— are you talking about?
Pls send me any newspaper articles or “sworn” statements that link me with the poster going by name of “hate Sestak”. send them to me c/o MCDC (I really don’t wish to publish my address). Anyone who accuses me of being that other person might well be guilty of libel/slander. I have avoided personal invextive in my commentaries, but I presumed that you were smart enough to discern the difference (stylisticly & substantively) between what I had to say & what “hate Sestak” had to say? Was I wrong in presuming that you were intelligent enough to see the difference?

Mr. Saunders: You will have to forgive Mr. Bailey. Derangement and mental decay (attributes possessed by Sestak himself, incidentally) are taking their toll.

Talking to yourself in public? I guess Jim Henson did that too.
The message here Richard/Rick is that these comments contain all sorts of trashy and unsubstantiated allegations. Since you and David seem committed to making yours, I’ve decided to add mine. All of them are equally valid – or worthless, as the case may be.

You never took me up on my original wager offer, so I’ll repeat it and make it slightly more favor-able to you…
My $20 says that Sestak gets less than 44% in the democratic senatorial primary.
ARE YOU A TAKER? Do you have confidence in your candidate?

Of course I do. But let’s up the ante: $100 to the winner of the 2010 PA Democratic Senate Primary. If it’s Specter, I will relay a check to his campaign to you to contribute. If Sestak wins, you write one for Sestak. This race is too important to argue beyond the primary, though Diano has already stated he will not support Sestak when he wins. How about you?

Bailey: It is a moot point, inasmuch as Representative Sestak will soon be relegated to the ash heap of history – where he rightfully belongs. He has accomplished nothing during his unremarkable tenure. Are the denizens of the 7th District better off than they were prior to his ascension to office? No, they most assuredly are not. Sestak is noted only for his conceit, narcissism, self-admiration and self-worship. And both his constituents and his fellow office-holders have grown weary of him and his vainglory. Sestak has been unable to galvanize voters – because he is almost universally loathed. Loathed by all – except you, Mr. Bailey. A dubious distinction indeed.

A gppd idea, loser writes check to winner’s campaign, but in recognition of my being retired, leave the amount at $20
Of course I’ll support the democratic winner. TOOMEY is a disaster, he doen’t recognize that there is a template for passive government called the Hoover administration 1930-1932 under which a market crash grew into a great depression.

Interesting. Representative Sestak now insists that he is neither liberal nor conservative, but rather “pragmatic.” Wonder how those progressives who voiced support for this venal politician will react to his revelation? Sestak also declined to comment on the minimum wage salaries enjoyed by his long-suffering campaign staff (what remains of his staff, that is). Sestak also refused to substantiate his accusations against the incumbent Democratic President of the United States. Representative Sestak’s demagoguery apparently knows no bounds.
