Williams says he’s formed committee, raised $500K
LANCASTER—After joining his potential primary opponents on a stage for the first time here Friday night, state Senator Anthony Williams made a claim that is sure to turn heads—and maybe raise some skeptical eyebrows.
Not only has Williams formed a committee to explore running for governor, he’s already raised about half-a-million dollars.
“I obviously have a viable chance and a platform from which to be heard,” Williams told pa2010.com at the Democratic State Committee meeting.
Such a fundraising pace would have him surpassing many of the other candidates for governor. When told people might have a hard time believing it, Williams shrugged, before saying he’d make documentation available soon.
He’ll make a final decision on whether or not to join the four-way primary field in a couple weeks, he said.

Dan, this is why the total money raised does not matter. Where it comes from matters. A week ago, he had no money. Now he has half a million. Same thing with Onorato. Some rich guys are powering his candidacy. Who are they? What are they getting for their money?
Honestly, if I had known that Goldman Sachs was the top giver to President Obama, I would never have voted for him. I do not want to vote for corporate tweedle-dum or corporate tweedle-dee. That is where the corruption comes from.

Isn’t that money he just carried over from his Senate Committee? Same with Onorato – $4 million was from “Friends of Onorato” which was his campaign committee for Allegheny County Exec. (When can you give out big government contracts, it’s easier to raise money).

Williams is getting a late start. If he’s “exploring”, he’s got to sh!t or get off the pot. His St. Senate term is up this year, so he’s got to get on the ballot for one seat or the other.
If he isn’t already up-and-running with staff around the state, he’s going to have a tough time getting on the ballot, and impossible time getting endorsements with almost all the good ones accounted for.
This smells more like getting some attention for his St. Senate campaign, maybe an interest in Lt. Gov., or just feeling out for 2014 race.
I don’t think he’s a credible candidate this close to petitions.

Sen. Williams is a divisive figure who will only spew the standard black politician’s line…while his “peeps” continue to get the shaft.
Read Chris Freind’s column on this. I don’t agree with his whole premise, but he seemed to nail it pretty good. And he had the guts to write it.

Lucie is correct about the importance of knowing who is holding the reins of these candidates. It has been a week since the finance reports were released. Every paper in the state did a story on the figures that anyone in the public could get by clicking a mouse. Not one reporter has done a story on where the money is coming from and that is something that the public cannot know from these filings. Why are newspapers dying? Because we can find out on our own and for free what they actually report as news. At the same time, they do not report on what we cannot find out on our own. If you want people to pay for your information, then dig some up. If you cannot do that, then you are not a reporter, you are a stenographer.

homer-
You want to show me a link to the campaign finance report for Williams that you complain the reporters failed to find?
I just searched for all Democratic Governor committees with a 2009 filing. I got 3 hits:
Doherty, Hoeffel and Rendell. (Wagner and Onorato didn’t even come up.)
So, either Williams formed the committee after the filing deadline, is under the wrong category or the state hasn’t caught up with all the filings.
If you are so smart, then why didn’t you “find out on [y]our own and for free” and break the story?
