Wecht won’t run for governor

When you have as many professional obligations as pathologist Cyril Wecht, apparently even solid name recognition and a wide open primary aren’t enough incentive to pursue the governor’s office.

Wecht—who has served as the Allegheny County Democratic party chairman, county commissioner and county coroner—announced Friday that he will not be joining the four-way Democratic primary for governor.

“I just don’t have the time,” Wecht told pa2010.com in a phone interview after his announcement. “I have six major speaking engagements in the next few months all over the country, one as far away as Hawaii. I have my teaching commitments at Carlow and Duquesne, and half a dozen homicide cases coming up in which I have done the autopsies. Running wouldn’t be feasible.”

Wecht would had little time to build up a campaign less than four months before the primary, and his interest in the race seemed to end almost quickly as it came to light. Many polls show almost three-quarters of voters still undecided in the race.

To not have Dr. Wecht run for Gov. is so sad. I will write him in and encouage others to do the same. He is one of a kind and PA needs a good person like him if the Democrats are going to win. Sure he has some enimies as he always does what is right and not what the party bosses say to do. Him not running is a major lose to not only the Democrats but to the entire Commonwealth of PA. I do understand his full plate of commmitments though as one person of his sature can only do so much. What a major lose to us all.
