Watkins raised $100K
Republican Joe Watkins raised just over $100,000 toward his run for Lieutenant Governor last year, finishing the year with about half of that money still in the bank, according to new state campaign finance data.
A longtime political operative, TV pundit and north Philadelphia pastor, Watkins is hoping his conservative credentials will help leverage him onto the party’s gubernatorial ticket despite party support in the southeast for Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley.
Almost half of Watkins’ fundraising haul came from a single check: a $50,000 donation from George Weiss, president of a financial firm in Hartford, Conn. Two other employees at the same firm gave Watkins a total of $11,000.
Most of his outlays were for campaign and media consulting, and he finished the year with about $50,000 on hand, not including about $14,000 in debt.

From an objective standpoint, why is PA2010 exclusively reporting on Watkins’ numbers while neglecting the others?
Lets see some context – who was highest, who was lowest, who is competitive in the money race…that’s good journalism.

To Megand1776,
Gosh you’re angry. What’s your guy FOR besides doing neat music videos??

Hey Norristown Tom,
Pennsylvania’s State Department is a bit slow when it comes to publishing these reports online. Watkins just happened to be one of the first we saw. We’ll continue to report numbers as they go public.
Thanks.

Sorry, Hello.
I don’t want to watch a neat music video. I thought you didn’t like those?
How about you spend 5 minutes writing some issues statements for your website instead of just driving around in a car with Joe mouthing off about whatever he sees at the moment?
Hello

To Megand1776,
You are way too angry. I LIKED the video you created for Johnson. I don’t imagine anyone is against Steve like you are against Joe. Hopefully you’ll tell us what he or his people might have done to you one day….good heavens….
The other videos Joe has done spell out his positions quite nicely, right there….on his website: http://www.watkins2010.com
Some folks are not anti-…. they are pro something…what is your candidate for??

Hello.
Just cos you’re angry at me, don’t assume I’m “angry” at Joe Watkins.
I like Joe as a commentator and a religious leader. He’s great at them. Doesn’t mean he has the executive experience for the Lt. Governor’s office. On top of that, he’s been in the system far too long to be considered an outsider, as much as he’d like to…I want an outsider with real-world leadership experience. Someone who meets with and relates to the tea party / grassroots movement, and someone who isn’t afraid to say the things that need to be said, name the names that need to be names, speak the truth that needs to be spoken, voice the words that need to be voiced, and stand up for the things that need to be stood up for in this state.

Personally, I don’t care how Watkins raises money. What I am interested in is why his supporters are so silent. I get that Joe was on TV. That’s great. He makes nice youtube videos. I appreciate that. However, what actual issue does he stand for? He wants to be anti establishment, but he seeks the State Party endorsement. Then he wants to be a grass roots leader but 75% of his fundraising comes from one source. This guy has no record. No money. No chance.
Hello

To Megand1776,
I’m not angry with you. I like your spirit, you’re fire…but I don’t know you. So I don’t KNOW what you are…and assuming, well, point well taken….but I THINK you’re angry….
Both Steve and Joe have met payrolls, you should know that if you don’t that about Joe. And being in the system,(in Joe’s case and OUTSIDE insider if you followed the SEPA Caucuses)…is not that bad if you are the type of insider who advocates for people, which Joe does and has done, with real results, most of his life…..

Well TrunkMan,
If anyone (and many have) took a moment to ask the man questions when he comes to their events, ask the tough questions, sit him down for an interview….hello, hello??… Or shake his hand and respectfully engage him and not ignore him as some have….you’ll get the answers you seek.
Well then who?

Sooo…is Tom Corbett going to have the convicted chet beiler as his running mate, flip flop cawley, operative watkins, or the one man the democrats won’t know how to deal with steve johnson (lmao)?? I would say aichele or nicky d, but they have been out of this race for weeks….

Johnson has to convince a whole lot of people he’s ready to govern. That’s coming from outsiders, insiders, wannabes you name it….

aichele does only have 7 votes (not including her own county) she has been out of the race for weeks.. no chance.

Watkins is good speaker; but no conservative, nor a reformer.
He ran against Santorum in 1994.
He raised his money from insiders.
And, he maybe a lot of things–but, what as for his job is…He is a lobbyist: and, his firm got paid to lobby for the Tolling of I-80.
Nice guy. Good speaker. Not a conservative. Not a reformer.

Was the firm lobbying for Tolling I-80 while Joe was there?
Old School

Again, Anonymous, Mr. W is a good man: His resume is bit sketchy. He was with the lobbying firm, it is on one of his webpages. And, the firm was hired to lobby for Tolling I-80. This is not in question.
So, we know he is/was a lobbyist. This is clear.
And, we know that he worked at a firm that lobbied to toll I-80.
Perhaps you ought to ask him and clear this up.
Again, not looking to bash any candidate. Just pointing out that no viable candidate is w/out flaws.
He is a good guy. But, as a lobbyist who raises money from insiders and pacs, and has campaigned against conservatives, he (like others) is not w/out “sins.”
There is no “perfect conservative” nor “pure reformer.”

To Old School,
For a non-bashing kind of guy, you’re doing a lot of bashing….and dodging. A firm that lobbys for a hot issue, and the person doing the lobbying specifically are two separate things.
Again Old School, was Joe there when the firm lobbied???…and as an add on so as to get you to answer the allegation, was Joe specifically doing the lobbying for the tolls?? And can you prove this?
Since you’re out here laying this out for all of us to see and respond to, you’ve got to help us out here so we can be sufficiently outraged at the “Good Guy” who’s not so perfect. No one ever said Watkins was perfect at anything. Sketchy resume and all.
Lastly, how about YOU ask him to clear things up? Courage to question his integrity here? Have the courage to do it to his face….Others have asked pointed questions of him directly, none too flattering, I might add…

All this back and forth must be another nervous campaign looking for a forest fire in the middle of a monsoon….
Watkins must be unsettling some folks. Hope the guy fights on through the primary. Corbett could use him. Gives us SE folks something to work with if he hangs in there….
...and then

Joe Watkins raised $60K in two checks, nevertheless, he has funds to run a primary but I don’t think he will. Jim Cawley is wired to get Penna. State Committee endorsement and Joe Watkins will, likely, drop out as has Carole Aichele.
Steve Johnson will run in the primary without the Party Endorsement. Good for him. He spent a lot of money, on the useless insider phony, Charlie Gerow. I don’t have the numbers but I recall that it was over $50,000 for which Steve got little in return.
This is the peril of those who believe those who present themselves as knowledgeable experts and whose expertise is taking naive candidate’s money.
Steve Johnson has learned from this costly mistake and will be a terrific Lt. Gov. independent of the party leadership.

Steve Johnson is a terrific guy and would be an excellent Lt. Gov. The downside of not being a professional politician is that you are fooled by so called experts and professionals who take a lot to money and accomplish nothing. What, exactly, were the tangible and measurable results from Charlie “GID” Gerow’s consulting?
Steve Johnson spent over $74,000 on Charlie Gerow for 7 months before firing him because he realized that he wasted $$$ on GID’s firm with little benefit to the candidate

We’re not totally sure of a couple of things, whether Watkins leaves the race if not endorsed (give him points for having a pair in the suicide mission of 1994) or if Steve Johnson can help govern if he eventually wins. No time for rookies right now. This cycle is monumentally important.
