The call that Williams never made

The call that Williams never made

Riding high earlier this month after knocking Democrat Joe Hoeffel on first-ballot voting at Democratic State Committee, state Senator Anthony Williams said he’d be giving Hoeffel a call.

“Just like he reached out to have me support him,” Williams said at the time. “I’m going to ask him to support me.”

Then he thought better of it.

In an interview Monday, Williams said he never made the call.

“I rethought that, and thought that was a little presumptuous on my part,” Williams told pa2010.com. “If anyone wants to run they should run. People can support me if I want.”

Not that the call would have been so well-received, anyway. Williams’ candidacy for governor, which he made official Monday, is seemingly most problematic for Hoeffel, who was hoping that Tom Knox’s exit from the race last month would leave him as the only candidate from the vote-rich southeast. Asked about Williams’ planned call at the time, Hoeffel co-campaign manager Lauren Townsend was blunt.

“Joe’s in the race,” she said. “This is a race that’s wide open.”

We wish Williams would get on board the Economic Impact Study for state single payer (SB400). He’s been asked repeatedly to cosponsor the resolution so SB400′s effectiveness can be proved by an independent consulting firm. What is he waiting for?
