Specter’s favorite fib: I voted more with Democrats

Specter’s favorite fib: I voted more with Democrats

Every politician has a favorite falsehood, and Arlen Specter seems to who have found his for this election cycle.

As he courts Democrats for his first primary race in the party, he often says that, even as a Republican, he voted more often with Democrats than with the GOP. I’ve heard him say this at least three times in the last month or so.

It’s a nice sound bite. But it’s not true.

The metrics vary depending on who’s doing the counting, but by no measure did he ever come close to voting more with Democrats than with Republicans when he was still on that side of the aisle. Over the last decade or so, most measures have his party-loyalty record somewhere in the 60-65 percent range—exactly what you’d expect from a centrist. Naturally, he got guff for not voting with Republicans enough back in the 2004 primary.

“Most times I’ve heard him say that, he has used the phrase ‘on many issues,’” campaign manager Christopher Nicholas said.

I’ll take his word for it, but I’ve never heard that qualifier. And I’ve spoken with enough campaign insiders and Specter loyalists to know what the basic defense is here: that when he says this, Specter is talking about major social issues that matter to Democrats.

Fair enough. But if that’s what he means, that’s what he should say (if he added that caveat, there would be some real truth to the statement). Not that it’s my place to manage messaging, but I’ve made this point to a couple campaign insiders.

But he made the false contention again last weekend in Chester County, so I guess that advice hasn’t made it to the candidate.

Well of course. Specter’s handlers undoubtedly came up with the carefully crafted “on many issues” qualifier and Arlen, like most very elderly people, simply forgot that he had to say that. I don’t know too many 80 year olds who can follow complex directions to the letter.

    Dan-
I agree that it’s wrong without the qualifier of key social issues or something similar.

Another interesting metric might be “where his vote made a difference”. For the stimulus vote, you’d have to include his pulling in Snowe and Collins.

Another metric could be how often his vote matched the majority of Dems on the issue.
The reason for that is, if the majority of Dems and majority of GOP voted for an issue, is it right to penalize Specter for voting with the Republicans? Also, do these vote counts cover bills/amendments or stupid stuff like resolutions that apple pie is tasty?

As the old saying goes: There’s lies, damn lies and statistics.

OK Diano, now your creditability is shot.

When you talk about things as the opposite of what they are you cant be trusted to be an honest broker.

Arlo Specter has always voted with the very conservative wing of the republicans party. Which is why he had the tea party grass roots support even as a democrat.

Shestak has no support unless he wears his magic jacket, the love-child of Mr. Poly and Mrs Esther.

So you might want to reconsider.

Sestak purports to be a liberal progressive democrat (his record casts doubt on this) and yet he keeps attacking our liberal progressive democratic President. Just has he’s attacked other Democrats in recent months.

By staying in this primary race, Sestak is only benefiting Toomey. Sestak’s chances of winning the nomination and general election are almost nil! By constantly attacking President Obama and other Democratic leaders, he’s only giving more ammo to Toomey.

Which side is Sestak really on?!?

You know, CD, it’s one thing to take part in these message boards. But it’s another to just make stuff up and claim it’s true.

Sestak doesn’t “purport” to be anything like a “liberal progressive democrat.” I think he’s thrilled when progressives treat him as one of their own (and we do, often), but he’s never claimed the label. He’s more accurately somewhere between moderate and liberal – how about this label I just made up: he’s a “DE-lib-erate” Democrat. As opposed to a fake Democrat, like Specter.

    Mancini-
Are you from a universe where the Germans won WWII?

“Arlo Specter has always voted with the very conservative wing of the republicans party.”
No. He hasn’t. That’s why the very conservative wing of the the the Republican party has hated Specter for years.

While Mancini overstated his argument, Specter was a loyal supporter and enabler of Bush the Destroyer for 8 years. And, as the main story says, a lie is still a lie.

Don’t forget his votes to seat Thomas, Alito and Roberts. We’ll see the damage from that for generations. Specter voted according to his self-interest then and now. He is not sincere about anything except self-preservation.

They all seem to be fabricating a history they wish was true and it will be up to the voter to do their homework to see where each actually stands.

Apparently Arlen is AWOL from the truth as usual. Like Cheney, he is attempting to rewrite history.
