Sestak claims White House made a job offer to nudge him from Senate race

Sestak claims White House made a job offer to nudge him from Senate race

Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) said Thursday that the White House had offered him a job in the federal government last summer, a claim that, if true, would be the most direct Democratic efforts to talk Sestak out of challenging Senator Arlen Specter disclosed to date.

Sestak made the claim during a taped interview with Larry Kane (hat-tip to The Inquirer). He did not say what job was supposedly dangled in front of him, though he did say it was high level and that he wouldn’t leave the race as part of any political deal.

One Democrat told The Inquirer that administration officials were angry with Sestak’s comments and denied the account. Sestak told the newspaper that wouldn’t “say who or how and what was offered. I don’t feel it’s appropriate to go beyond what I said,” because the conversation was confidential.”

The Democratic establishment has been overwhelmingly behind Specter since he switched parties last April, support that culminated with his endorsement from the state party earlier this month.

Hey Joe, would you stop complaining and start running, you remind me of late grandmother, oh the White House offered me this, oh, my staff keeps leaving, oh, Spector is not playing fair, we do not want elect a fetch to the Senate. Don’t let a box of kleenexes be your campaign logo.

I doubt Sestak was offered Secretary of the Navy (loose lips sink ships). I also doubt that Admiral Mullen, who made it a point to fire Sestak, would want Sestak running the Navy (or a garbage scow).

Sestak claims the alleged offer was made back in July 2009, after Sestak had finished his 2nd quarter fundraising (using stationery with congressional seal) and awaiting his daughter’s permission to run.

At that time, Specter hadn’t gotten his bump from facing down the tea party activists at some raucous health care forums, and Sestak’s potential hadn’t peaked.

Sestak’s so weak now against Specter, he’d be lucky to get an “offer” cleaning the toilets in the Senate men’s room and warning people when Larry Craig was there.

Joe Sestak needs to send his people throught the state. Entertaining the whackjobs in the suburbs only goes so far. If Sestak is serious he needs a serious campaign across the state. He never has people in the northeast and in the lehigh valley. Otherwise, he can whine about a position in the obama administration or about arlen and lose.

The same website now says that the White House has denied Sestak’s claim… interesting.

If this is true, Sestak should have accepted the offer. Obviously he can’t win against Specter in the primary. And he can’t run for his House seat with the federal allegations hanging over his head. Running against former US Attorney Meehan when Sestak is facing federal violations?!?

Anyway… he can’t win either a Senate or house seat. He’ll be unemployed soon enough. I can’t wait!

Clearly, Representative Sestak is becoming unhinged. The mounting pressure – the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) probe of his ties to UFCW Local 1776 President Wendell Young IV, the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) inquiries into his various improprieties, the abrupt departures of key staff members, etc. – is taking its toll on the increasingly fragile demagogue. Representative Sestak is not accustomed to feeling the heat. Pity.

I reiterate: Sestak is not genuinely committed to defeating Senator Specter. Sestak is desperately hoping that a deal can be struck: he exits the campaign, and prominent Democrats intercede on his behalf with the Justice Department and the OCE. Meantime, whatever funds he raises will be deposited in a Legal Defense Fund. These imprudent remarks are further evidence of an ongoing battle behind-the-scenes – a battle Sestak is losing, and losing badly.

What is most unfortunate, however, is that Sestak continues to raie funds from an unknowing and unsuspecting public. He is deceiving this innocent people, stripping them of their hard-earned resources. It is shameful – but entirely unsurprising. Meanwhile, increasingly pusillanimous “journalists” stand idly by and do nothing. But [sigh] perhaps that is not surprising either.

Incidentally, Sestak supporters (the few that remain) should wonder aloud why the demagogue is broaching this subject at this juncture. If he is not in dire straits, and is not facing federal charges, why is he suddenly engaged in a logomacy with the Obama White House? What possible benefit could Sestak derive from these remarks – other than warding off a federal probe? The empirical reality is that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is pursuing a bribery case against Representative Sestak. And Sestak is employing an (ultimately futile)strategy aimed at deterring an indictment.

By the way, “Admiral” – your dear friend Wendell isn’t likely to remain silent much longer. Honor among thieves…

In 2007 Sestak abandoned the local Dems in their local and county races. But he had time on election day to go to New Hampshire for Hillary, instead of visiting local polling places and promoting candidates. Now, think…. what politician misses the chance to visit the polls during an election day? (answer: one that doesn’t intend to run again).
Despite Joe’s fake disdain for “anointing establishment candidates”, Joe was out there very early, committing his super-vote to Hillary and anointing her.

The suspicion was that if Hillary won, Sestak was going to abandon his seat for an appointment. Sestak’s fans were hoping for Secretary of Defense. However, that would be as irresponsible as picking Palin for VP.

It’s interesting to note that Joe likes to claim people offer him stuff behind the scenes. He claims that he was the establishment pick for Senate in Jan 2009 (he decline, but, then offer withdrawn when he changed his mind). Now he claims that in July 2009, he was offered some unnamed, high-ranking position that he didn’t deserve by merit (that he could get only by political deal making). Again, he passed up an alleged opportunity.

In both of these cases, the offers are not currently on the table, as Sestak missed his window of opportunity and pulled the rug out from under himself.

Sestak seems to be the girl at the prom the guys will flirt with for a quickie, while they wait for their real date to arrive.

If Sestak is going to continue to bash the Democrats and sell out the Democratic Party, why is he not running as an Independent?

Hey Mr. Diano – check out the date on the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) letter in your possession. They have 30 days from the date of receipt to begin a preliminary review. Then 45 days to complete a secondary review. And then they forward it to the Ethics Committee, and the Committee, in turn, makes the allegations PUBLIC. Getting close to disclosure time…heh.

That’s because Sestak is Toomey’s best campaign worker.

I think Rep. Sestak is a great guy. I think he would do the best for the cause by making sure we keep that 7th District seat and, incidentally, also keep Lentz’s state seat.

  15. Mancini

    Feb 19th, 2010

Finally Diano, your starting to make sense.

I don’t think the Toomey – Sestak alliance is strong enough to withstand the next couple of months.

Where is Hillary for Shestak now? He apears to be the sole hard core conservative guy in the democrats group, and now his territorial islationism (and political) is coming up to haunt him.

    Oh the humanity!

  16. David Diano

    Feb 19th, 2010

    Greg-
Maybe Sestak can run for Lentz’s St. Leg seat!!

    Mancini-
Sestak did his duty working for her campaign as payback for Bill helping Joe back in 2006. Quid-pro-quo completed. They are going to let Sestak hang in the wind.

    Diano –

Once again you show just how stupid you are. The Clinton’s are not getting involved because they are not going to publicly campaign against the White House. Come on, even an idiot like you should be able to figure that out.

I have confirmed that there is no investigation, you loser.

    HaverfordDem-
The Clintons are not getting involved because Bill fired Sestak’s @ss from his NSC position and sent him back to the fleet. (I got this from another Haverford Dem back in 2006.)

Sestak served his purpose as a super-voter for Hillary in 2007/2008 as repayment for Bill’s help in 2006. The quid-pro-quo was completed. No further action required.

I’m curious how you “confirmed” there is no investigation.

I can’t confirm there is current investigation, other than affidavits have been sworn out against Sestak and submitted to FBI and OCE. I would reasonably assume (based on the charges) that some investigation would need to take place (regardless of whether it bore fruit).

Hater seems pretty convinced the ax is about to fall.

    Feb 19th, 2010

HaverfordDem: Ha! Spare me. You think you can deter me by making disparaging remarks? Truly laughable. Confirmed it with whom? Sestak’s few remaining staff members? Ill-educated dolt. Sestak (and apparently, his lackeys) appear convinced that coercion and intimidation always achieve results. Not anymore, bucko. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) strongly suspects that Representative Sestak took bribes from UFCW Local 1776 President Wendell Young IV. In exchange, Young IV was appointed to Sestak’s transition team and to Sestak’s Labor Advisory Committee. Sestak also intervened in a labor dispute (in violation of House Ethics Rules) involving the UFCW Local 1776 and Acme Markets. The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), meanwhile, is investigating other violations of federal law committed by Sestak (including his illegal use of the seal of the House of Representatives on campaign literature).

How do you explain the abrupt departures of pivotal Sestak staff members (including his Political Director and his Communications Director) at the height of a primary battle? How do you explain a Democratic primary contender making inflammatory remarks about the incumbent Democratic President? Too nescient (time to purchase a thesarus, dunce) to explain these developments, HaverfordDem? Maybe key staffers are fleeing because they know their boss is doomed. And maybe Sestak is attacking the White House in a desperate effort to ward off the ongoing federal inquiry. Sestak may even be concerned that federal action is imminent – and wants it to appear as though such action is the product of an Obama vendetta. Makes sense, huh, HaverfordDem?

Staffers quitting. Abysmal poll numbers. The FBI. The OCE. Now, Sestak has antagonized the White House. This is truly a thing of beauty!
