Schroder’s still got support in ChesCo

Schroder’s still got support in ChesCo

State Representative Curt Schroder (R-Chester) was no longer running for Congress when the Chester County GOP met to make an endorsement in the race on Saturday. But his presence in the race was still very much felt.

About five weeks after he dropped out of the 6th District race in the wake of incumbent Jim Gerlach’s surprise decision to see reelection, Schroder still netted about a quarter of the endorsements votes cast by county committee members. Though Gerlach easily won the party’s endorsement, the strong showing for a candidate not even in the race underscored just how much Schroder’s supporters were stung by Gerlach’s decision—even after Steven Welch’s withdrawal from the contest effectively secured a primary win for the incumbent.

In the end, Gerlach got 128 votes, well over the 60 percent needed for an endorsement. Schroder, who was a favorite of the party’s conservative wing, got 56 votes, and Tea Party candidate Patrick Sellers had 9.

In an interview with pa2010.com, Schroder said people had told him of their intention to enter his name into nomination for the committee’s endorsement, and that he decided to take a hands-off approach to the matter. He has made no secret of his frustration with how things turned out.

“I took the approach that I wasn’t going to encourage it or discourage it,” Schroder said. “People can do what they want to. It was gratifying to know that there were a number of committee people who would vote for me.”

Schroder was confident, though, that the party will now come together.

“Once you get past the endorsement I think the party gets united,” he said. “Whatever differences there might be between various groups within the party, those pale with our differences with the Democrats.”

A campaign spokesman didn’t make Gerlach available for an interview over the weekend. But in a statement, Gerlach said: “I am honored to have earned the Chester County Republican Committee endorsement and extremely grateful for the support of the hard working committee members who have been the driving force behind every one of my victories.

“This endorsement clearly signals that Republicans are energized and united in purpose this year,” he added. “Our fight for common sense solutions that create jobs, let families keep more of their paychecks and shrink our crippling deficits is well under way.”

Curt should consider getting back in the race. I think he’d win.

Curt could win? Are you kidding me. He was 5th in fund raising in Q4. 1. Pike 2. Trevdi 3. Welch 4. Cohen 5. Schroder

He also took a higher % of PAC money than any other candidate in the southeast. This guy is as much of an establishment guy as Gerlach.

And Gerlach would hang Curt pension grab and pay raise vote over his head. Not to mention the fact that Curt has been far from fiscally conservative in actions. He talks a good talk, but look at his record. Tax increase, tax increase, tax increase.

Check out Gerlach’s still HUGE baggage….card check SPONSOR, big spender, him looking at the 6th—looking at ME— as a damn consolation prize. What’s his eye on next? Casey? How about dog catcher?

And by the way, Schroder WILL win in 2012– after Gerlach loses in the Fall. And he will lose.

Had not Steve Welch dropped out, Jim Gerlach might not have been endorsed. Of the 193 votes cast, Jim Gerlach need 116 and he ended up with 128, a narrow margin that Steve Welch might well have received enough votes to deny Incumbent the endorsement which would have hurt Jim Gerlach badly in November. Steve Welch took one for Team Establishment and I am sure they are grateful, whatever that means.

  5. I will synthesize the prior comments thusly.

First, Curt struck the correct hands-off posture, allowing the committee-people [who are in-the-know] to “speak” to Jim.

Second, this squarely places him as next-in-line in 2012 for, if Jim loses…he’s there, and if Jim wins and runs for senate…he’s there!

Third, Curt’s record is impeccible, and he has acknowledged that–although he was ALREADY out-front in his criticism of the Perzel-crowd–he could have been more outspoken regarding BonusGate.

Fourth, Jim would not have gone-negative on Curt had he re-entered the race; he’s honorable,

Fifth, $$$-raising [particularly when compared with the D's and with a self-funded competitor, self-revealed acutely/chronically to be a D-in-disguise...as recognized belatedly by his own supporters] is not the sole criterion that should be weighed; as demonstrated by the Tea Party Movement [and Obama last cycle], PASSION is pivotal, and Curt generates that among his supporters.

Sixth, “Nic” is requested to document his assertions….

I think we all saw that Curt was a flawed candidate. He really has no one to blame but himself. His votes do not match his conservative bluster, let alone the standard that the Bobs hold other candidates to. I was personally surprised by the amount of Harrisburg dollars he collected from PACs with business before his committees as well as the back scratching from other Reps. I will be surprised if we don’t hear more from him in the future, but I hope this experience has either taught him to temper his behavior to get in line with his voting record or take true conservative positions. He might start with explaining / apologizing for his pension and pay raise actions.

I like Curt personally and hope he does act more conservatively, get better advice and execute a better strategy.

Check out his 2003 vote to increase the personal income tax by 16% voting w/ Governor Ed Rendell. Do your homework doctor.

Not b/c you asked Dr. Bob, but b/c the research is so surprisingly easy to find…

    1. “Curt was/is a flawed candidate.” Opinion that is certainly open for debate.
    2. “Curt’s votes do not match his conservative bluster.” Voted for Rendell’s ’03 tax increase as well as gas tax increase. Failed to return or repudiate the pay raise. Voted to increase his own pension.
    3. “Curt does not live up to the Bobs standard.” Given BobG’s recent (and commendable) crusade on the coming pension crisis, it is hard to see how either one of the Bobs can support Curt given his pension votes. I supported their ousting of Brightbill and Jubelier, but when I see Curt voted similarly I wonder why there is now a double standard.
    4. “Curt collected Harrisburg dollars from PACs with business before his committees as well as the back scratching from other Reps.” http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/dcdev/forms/C00462226/434808/ (via pa2010.com story of Oct. 13, 2009)
    5. “I will be surprised if we don’t hear more from him in the future, but I hope this experience has either taught him to temper his behavior to get in line with his voting record or take true conservative positions. He might start with explaining / apologizing for his pension and pay raise actions.” Free advice from ChescoTom.

And now I have added “Dr. Bob is requested to document his assertions” to my vocabulary. :)

Its also extremely hypocritical that Curt and his supporters can walk around stamping their feet about Gerlach going back on his word, but Schroder went back on his word too when he re-declared for the state House! It’s all politics. Why is there not a double standard for Curt–they forget that part. I think there were a handful of candidates running in his old state house seat that got the shaft
