LANCASTER—It didn’t even need to go to a roll-call vote.

After campaigning for Lieutenant Governor for more than a year, former Philadelphia City Controller Jonathan Saidel easily won the state Democratic Party’s endorsement here Saturday, needing only a simple voice-vote to do so. Former Commonwealth Court Judge Doris Smith-Ribner is also running, but a candidacy that has struggled to get off the ground now seems even more unlikely to have a strong showing in the May primary.

It was the easy victory that Saidel and his supporters had forecast. Only speculation that Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty might drop from the governor’s race to run for Lt. Gov. instead had briefly put it in doubt. But Doherty was nowhere to be seen when Democratic State Committee members met to vote, and Saidel cruised.

“It’s always a humbling experience when people vest their trust in you,” Saidel said after the vote. “I won’t betray that trust.”

He now faces the unusual position of being an endorsed Lt. Gov. candidate with no clear running mate to top the ticket. He signaled that he’ll stay above the fray of an open primary.

“I won’t endorse,” Saidel said, “and I’ll allow the voters in the primary to decide who should be my running mate.”

That Smith-Ribner is an imbecile. She wants to run for State Senate..then Lt. Gov. -NO-YOU ARE NOT QUALIFIED. Get a REAL job in the public sector. If you were really bright, you would have realized that everyone knows that you are running to get a job -go away-you are annoying and our party is moving forward WITHOUT YOU!

Congrats Saidel, you deserved to win. You were decisive from the start in your approach and worked hard to pursue your goal even BEFORE you had an opponent. You simply earned the nomination.

    md –

    Earned! That’s debatable.

This is Cong. Brady’s choice, who, based upon last weeks actions, has ensured that the field remains clear for Saidel.

Delco – you know what makes me laugh? You and people like you. Call or meet Brady and tell him to his face…sounds like you have a problem.

    Hello Delco MOD,

You may not know this, but Congressman Brady’s power wanes significantly the farther west you go in the Commonwealth. Saidel had an across the state, overwhelming endorsement. People that did not know who Bradey or for that matter Sen. Anthony Williams, who had his own big day, voted for Saidel while most people from West whispered who are these guys – Williams & Bradey. Saidel got votes in all 67 counties. He campaigned across the state in all kinds of hamlets, often more than once. His message was consistent (even if zany); his team was consistent; he was visible; accessible to the press; started campaigning early; and raised money effectively. He worked for it. I’m not saying he was my candidate – I’m just saying don’t hate, congratulate.

There may be a surprise candidate that will be coming forward that represents the populist fervor

Keep looking for your Fat Lady right there out west in Clarion- you won’t have to look too long there Karl!!! Understand that this guy Saidel has been a friend to many people throughout PA over the past 30 years. His credentials are outstanding and is the far and away the brightest candidate from either party (he should run for Governor). Do a little more research and feed your mind the proper oxygen and information it needs..THIS GUY SAIDEL IS FOR REAL AND YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE HIM karl…
