Congressman Jim Gerlach’s (R-6) campaign on Tuesday released an internal poll showing the incumbent with a huge, 65-point lead over primary challenger Steven Welch, in its latest attempt to paint Welch’s candidacy as a futile effort that would only hurt the GOP.

(Glenmoore, PA) – A poll released by the Gerlach for Congress campaign today showed a dominating lead over primary opponent Steve Welch, with four term Republican Congressman Jim Gerlach leading in a head-to-head match up by a 71-6% margin. The poll was conducted February 9-11 of 300 likely Republican primary voters. Additionally, Gerlach boasts an 87-7% favorable-unfavorable rating, while the unknown Welch has a 7-5% rating.

Strike two names from the list of potential candidates in the 12th Congressional District.

Democrat Jack Hanna and Republican Diana Irey, both of whom had been floated as possible candidates to succeed the late Congressman John Murtha, told pa2010.com on Monday that they won’t be running.

Hanna, who chairs the state Democratic Party’s southwest caucus, said in an e-mail that “I’m not a candidate, but will be helping coordinate the State Committee’s selection process.”
