Lt. Gov. update: Rizzo’s out, Urban’s hedging his bets
A few days after the state GOP made its endorsement for Lieutenant Governor, the final primary field is still falling into place.
Philadelphia City Councilman Frank Rizzo told The Daily News on Tuesday that he won’t be running. His candidacy never really got off the ground—he made some last summer, but then was quiet for months before promising a late push recently. But he didn’t show up at the Republican State Committee meeting last weekend in Harrisburg, and his name wasn’t entered into nomination for the endorsement. He would have had to resign his City Council post if he tried to get on the ballot.
“Without an endorsement it would not make sense for me to leave my position in City Council,” Rizzo said. “I’ll continue to do a job that I love.”
Meanwhile, Luzerne County Commissioner Stephen Urban is gathering signatures to get on the ballot—but he’s not exactly diving in head-first. The Citizens’ Voice reports that he’s circulating nominating petitions for Lt. Gov., but also doing the same for a run at the state Senate. Urban told the newspaper he won’t end up running for both offices, and will make a final decision about which job to seek after meeting with supporters in the coming days.
Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley was endorsed by the party last weekend.

Just spoke with Rizzo staff yesterday, unless there is a “burning desire” to be lt governor or any other office, any candidate should make the decision to defer. Urban should run for State Senate, in the Republican side, it is always, the endorsed candidate gets it. NOW on the Democratic side there may be a surprise grass roots candidate coming forth…stay tuned.
