LEFTOVERS: NEPA unions for Specter, Sestak bests him on environement, Carlineo in ‘Young Guns’
A few items slipped by us earlier in the week.
A couple unions of teachers and firefighters in northeast Pennsylvania endorsed Senator Arlen Specter’s reelection bid. The incumbent’s been picking up a bunch of labor endorsements recently, and the latest came from unions representing almost 2,000 workers. “Senator Specter has a long and outstanding history of supporting firefighters, labor, and working families in out state and nation,” Dave Gervasi, president of the Northeast Pennsylvania Professional Firefighters Association, said in a statement. “Senator Specter stands by us, and we will stand by you Senator for your reelection. You have been a long time protector of the protectors, and for that we proudly endorse your candidacy.”
Specter may be winning the union race, but primary opponent Joe Sestak is getting the environmental props. The League of Conservation Voters released its 2009 report card, giving Sestak a 93 percent. That smashed Specter’s score of 64 percent, prompting Sestak to Tweet: “If Congress were school and environmental issues were a class, Specter would be passing notes in the back.” Cute.
And former Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick has some 8th District company in the National Republican Congressional Committee’s “Young Guns” program for measuring candidate progress. Gloria Carlineo, one of several primary contenders against Fitzpatrick, was added to the program recently. Along with her decent fundraising showing and growing political organization, it’s the latest sign that Carlineo could be the most viable threat to Fitzpatrick’s hopes of taking on Congressman Patrick Murphy (D-8). “I am proud that the NRCC has recognized that my candidacy based on restoring faith in our Congress is worthy of inclusion and I look forward over the coming weeks to spreading this message far and wide across the 8th Congressional District,” Carlineo said in a statement.
That’s all for now, political junkies. Log-on Wednesday for a breakdown of the GOP’s selection process in the 12th District special election.

I hope GOP machine knows they are being closely watched during this race. Fitzpatrick doesn’t deserve their support until he has won a strong primary challenge from Gloria Carlineo (or one of the other patriotic candidates). They should be providing Carlineo with as much support as they are Fitzpatrick and not posing any obstacles. Right now these candidates need signatures to be on the ballot. I hope those that read this visit their websites and learn how they can sign to make this a competitive race. The one that emerges will be stronger for it and be able to defeat Murphy.

C’mon, the Bucks GOP is already supporting Fitzpatrick. Pat P. circulated Mike’s initial announcement to all GOP committee people – and they did not even want to give this email list to the other candidates. The Bucks GOP arranged (and paid for?) Mike’s announcement event. Harry and Pat attended Mike’s announcement – but failed to do the same for any other candidates.
But that’s all fine. These other candidates are not counting on any help from Harry, Pat and Co. Come May, the voters will decide and I bet that voters will not want the same old, same old. However, there will need to be only one GOP candidate facing Mike in the end – otherwise, the non-Mike vote will be split.
Should be interesting!
