Joe Sestak Responds to Senator Specter’s Crumbling Support

By SESTAK FOR SENATE

MEDIA, PA – U.S. Senate candidate Congressman Joe Sestak released the following statement today following results of a Franklin & Marshall College Poll showing that only 25% of Pennsylvanians believe incumbent Senator Arlen Specter deserves re-election:

“We all know how challenging this year’s election will be, and we all know the importance of having a Democrat representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate. After 30 years, the people of Pennsylvania know Arlen Specter and have reached a verdict on Arlen Specter. Only one-in-four believe he deserves re-election — the lowest rating of any incumbent in the country. That is less than one percent support for every year in office. His approval rating and favorability are both second-worst in the Senate. Pennsylvania has a lower opinion of Senator Specter’s job performance than the nation had of Vice President Cheney’s at the end of the last administration.

“While Arlen Specter spent three decades in Washington, I spent three decades serving our country. Of course, my name recognition across the state is lower. That’s why I have traveled to all 67 counties and held more than 200 events statewide in January. Everywhere we go people are are responding to our message of accountable leadership. But it will be enormously difficult for Arlen Specter to change people’s minds after five terms in office.  If Arlen Specter is our nominee, then Pat Toomey is our next Senator — and it’s clear from Toomey’s fundraiser yesterday with a who’s-who of corporate lobbyists that his interests lie with big business, not working Pennsylvanians.

“I will beat Pat Toomey. I look forward to pitting my record of serving this nation in the U.S. Navy and fighting for working families in Congress against his record as a Wall Street trader and head of the Club for Growth lobbyist group. Senator Specter has had a long career, but the people are looking for a new generation of leadership.”
