Doherty for state Senate?

Doherty for state Senate?

Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty is reportedly being urged by Democrats to abandon his gubernatorial race and run instead for the state Senate seat being vacated by Minority Leader Bob Mellow.

The Inquirer, citing an anonymous campaign aide, reports that Doherty is “is listening to what they have to say.”

Almost immediately after Mellow announced Tuesday that he won’t seek reelection, speculation was rampant that running for his seat would be a good move for Doherty. His bid for the Governor’s Mansion is increasingly seen as unrealistic, and the prospect of running for Lieutenant Governor as also dimmed in recent days.

I walked by Doherty’s Philly office last week; it was at night, so it was naturally closed, but there was also a lease sign in the window with a phone number. Seems to me those signs only go up when a tenant is finished there. Anyone know anything about this one? Could be yet more evidence that Doherty’s dropping out.

He is done but will not admit he failed. His new claim is to run for Mellows position, but will not win that either! After all the years of lies and broken promises thing caught up with him!He is finished!

The Governors race has truly come down to two guys. Doherty and Hoeffel are not those two guys, and running for Mellow’s seat would be a better fit for Doherty at this point and for the people of that Senatorial district.

Any thing at this point will fit Doherty. He is frustrated at the run for Gov. and deperation seems obviuos,he is not well liked in the state thats well shown, what makes people think he has a shot as a sentor?

Doherty hasn’t been shown to be disliked in the state at all. He’s been shown to not have any name recognition in the state and even within the Democratic Party. And the article is talking about his running as a state Senator in the district he resides, not U.S. Senateor.

I was at state committee and supported my friend Jack Wagner but was very impressed with Mr. Doherty. He has a strong base of dedicated supporters and has a future in state government. He should run for this seat and if Corbett wins in November, take on the Republicans in 2014.

“hank”?? Are you drunk? You can’t type and don’t know the difference between the state and federal governments.

    RE: P.T.

I also voted at the meeting over the weekend and spoke at length on Friday night with a young man who was there to support Doherty. Doherty seems like a capable, good-natured guy and he knows the cards aren’t there for his statewide ambitions this cycle. If he’s in the state senate, he’s got a good base to use to run statewide again next time. I’d support him if Jack were not running.

PT get your facts straight ,Doherty is giving up on his run for Governor and is going to run for Mellow’s seat,Its transparent you are a Doherty supporter or family member!Oops I mispelled a word the word is coming to an end just like Doherty’s career! Also he did not even get backed by the democrats in his own town. How bad is that.P T sounds a little upset his bown went down in flames:fyi I dont drink Doherty does enough for every one.

Also P T your anger about me being drunk just show’s you frustation about your man Doherty having his run for Governor come to an end.And I also have extensive knowledge about state and federal government.I believe P T to be a family member of Doherty,if not why would you get so angry. Also check the Philly paper there are comments about Doherty not being well liked even in his own town. Also P T come to Scranton and ask people what they think of Doherty.

Ed H I know state senator not U S senator district 22.Well he didnt get one vote on Saturday thats to begin with. Some times name recognition does play an important part in the political arena. The Philly paper had a write up on Dohety.I am from the Scranton area and for one will tell you that he is not what he appears to be.I have had been around him and will tell you for sure that he is a compulsive liar a user and self centered egomaniac. Is this the type of person you want running the state of Pa after what Rendell did to it.I will also tell you I am not the only one who feels this way.

    Dan Hirshhorn:

Maybe limit the comments on this board to the literate. Or require some threshold level of sanity above “hank.”

    hank:

I met Doherty once and have never been to Scranton. So, no, not a family member, psycho.

Well Dan what type of moderator are you?I express myself and because my beliefs are different, people call me a drunk.psycho and you insult me by calling me insane and iliterate. That explains exactly what type of person you are.And P T if you met only Doherty one time how can you comment on his fan base?I believe Dan you owe me an apology! You have never met me nor spoke to me.Come spend some time in Scranton and feel the frustaration that we do.

I can comment on his supporters because there were 20 of them traveling with him over the weekend. I can comment on his popularity because he’s been reelected several times and his success in Scranton has been received widespread press attention.

I can’t waste any more time debating someone like “hank” over a politician I don’t even know…but seriously, dude, get some help. Or at least cite actual evidence for your “opinions” instead of saying meaningless drivel about the guy like “compulsive liar a user and self centered egomaniac.” What does that even mean? NUTCASE. Tell the nurse it’s time to take away your computer. And Wagner for Governor!

After what Rendell did to the state? What? Run it reasonably well throughout his tenure until the economy went south all over the country? The State Committee vote, while important in the realm of endorsements, doesn’t mean that Doherty was unpopular. It basically mean that Wagner and Onorato were the main contenders in the Democratic race this year. Had it been another year, maybe it would have been different for Doherty. Frankly, Doherty’s success in Scranton is something I wouldn;t mind seeing in the State Senate. Maybe down the road his chance for Governor will come.

Hank does make some points you may not like or you disagree with .Rendell has over spent his way for years, the pgcb and casino’s are a mess and couldn’t reach a budget for 2010.I am also from Scranton,Doherty has put the city into a $500 million dollar debt,he has hired and created so many positions of un qualified people to run the city. Also not to mention the over inflated salaries they get.The people traveling with Doherty are some family some friends and some of the people he promised employment to.So why get upset if you dont know the situations.May be pa2010.com will do some Q& A with these people running across the state instead of copy and paste journalism.

PT I believe your insults are not justified. If you only met Doherty one time and never have been to Scranton how can you comment on how Scrantonians feel about the mayor. You are right he has been elected several times and really had no one with any insight running against him.The last time he ran a man who didnt campaign in November almost beat him on a write in.So calling some one a drunk and nut case for there beliefs makes you look like an angry supporty for Doherty.

The big issue is that it’s a little too big of a jump from Mayor of Scranton to Governor. He probably should have run for LtGov instead; it would have brought a nice balance to a ticket most likely headed by a Western PA figure.

I don’t know that he would want to go to the State Senate — do the Dems have a decent shot at taking back the majority in the near future? If not, he might as well stay put in Scranton.

Why does Doherty think he deserves anything? He could have lost in November, the guy who ran against him didn’t spend tens of thousands of dollars to fight the fight. I’ll bet it would have been a different story if half the people paid attention to what was going on. Doherty had these grandiose ideas way before the primary in May of 2009. If more people believed the rumors, instead of the television adds(his dollars) and Doherty’s personal rag(Scranton Times) about all he’s done for Scranton, it may have been a different story. It should have been what Doherty’s done to Scranton. He should limp back home and DO HIS JOB. South Side is a mess, as well as lower Green Ridge, Providence, West Side. Gang activity is up, Violent crime is up and about the only place that’s not changed much is upper Green Ridge(Doherty’s area).
