Doherty dropping out of guv race in favor of state Senate run

Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty on Wednesday confirmed widespread speculation that he will opt out of his run for governor and seek the state Senate seat being vacated by Bob Mellow instead.

Doherty, a Democrat, told The Times-Tribune that Mellow’s decision not to seek reelection leaves “a major void.”

“The issues in the Senate race are the same as for governor,” he said.

Doherty’s gubernatorial campaign has been lagging for weeks, starting with the departure of his campaign manager, continuing with disclosure of a war chest that came in well under his opponents, and seeming to culminate with his recent decision not to enter his name into nomination when state Democratic Party leaders voted on an endorsement.

His campaign has scheduled an announcement for Thursday morning in Scranton.

Good call. Met him at the Progressive Summit and truly enjoyed talking with him. I think this is the right move for him because it’s not his time for governor. He’ll be a strong senator and will be a top contender for governor in four or eight years.

I hope he endorses Hoeffel! We could use some more support in the Northeast.

Doherty is endorsing chicken wings for the next Eagles game.

I think it’s a good call by Doherty, too. He’s a capable leader and will likely shine in the State Senate when he gets elected. Kudos to him for not dragging out the race and opting to help the state by running for the seat Mellow is giving up.

I know Chris Doherty personally and he is a great leader. I always say he has been to Scranton what Steve Reed was to Harrisburg in terms of how he has revitalized a very distressed city. He will make an excellent state Senator.

Boy, Ed Rendell and his puppy Dan Onorato really led Doherty down the primrose path. He was a little naive about how the big dog hunts and they made him look foolish.

Mr. Doherty is an excellent statesman and I hope he runs for governor again in the future. He has the right background to balance the public and private sectors to keep Pennsylvania moving forward at maximum efficiency.

    Chris:

Now that you will be running for office in a pro-life area, will you change your mind again, and once again become pro-life?

I don’t know who is behind the Doherty propaganda machine but they do a great job. His administration has been a disaster for taxpayers in Scranton and he has amassed over $250 million additional debt for a distressed city which continues to lose business due to excessive taxation. Where can I buy those “rose colored glasses” his “supporters” wear? He say he is a salesman…(Can he show proof of 10 new jobs he has created out of the 6,000 he claims?)…well I agree, but “sbake oil” is passe and so is he.

This seems to be getting some national headlines. Chuck Todd seemed to think this showed weakness on dem side. I think this is a good move. Onorato seems to have he resources and not many can touch that right now.

What a pathetic politian. Gov,Lt Gov, Senator, Mayor, Burger King ‘King’. Don’t just run for office, just run away. Show that you REALLY care for the PEOPLE. Immoral and nothing else.

Scr. Citizen, go to another board with your drivel. We appreciate thoughtful debate here, not meager-minded axe grinding.

Ed H ,Doherty will NEVER GET ELECTED
Ed H what kind of comment is opting to help the state by running for Mellow’s seat (helping no one but himself) get a clue!

Jackie, or should I say Virginia it an open forum and all people should be aware of Doherty and his spending machine. He has put Scranton in to such debt that the city will never recover from. The roads are a mess ,down town is empty.Where are the 6000 jobs he said he created?Where is the economic development he has claimed. He is out of his league again.Spend on parks no one uses.Spend on meaningless projects so his friends can get them.Let the truth be known. No ax to grind, just facts!People of Scranton are fed up,thanks!

    Jackie:

You met him at the Progressive Summit–that is the one with ACORN as a prime sponsor, isn’t it? Isn’t the Progressive related to the other so called forward looking movements, such as, National Socialist, communists, facists, etc. Chris should be ashamed of himself for attending such a meeting. Chris was supported by many, because we thought of him as a somewhat conservative guy. I was wrong to support him, I will never make that mistake again. Yes Jackie, I voted for him for Mayor, that’s when he was answering the question regarding abortion stating that he was Pro-life. He is a lier and a opportunist.
