Buchanan makes it official (Updated)

After months of anticipation, former U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan formally entered the race for Congress in the 4th District Wednesday, saying she is “concerned about the miss-placed priorities in Washington and our broken system of government.”

Buchanan’s candidacy sets up a likely general election matchup with sophomore Congressman Jason Altmire (D-4), though Buchanan will first have to get past attorney Keith Rothfus in the May primary. Though she’s been laying the groundwork for some time, entering the race only months before the nominating contest gives Buchanan minimal time to raise money and assemble an organization. She has filed paperwork declaring her candidacy with the FEC.

“I am running for Congress because Washington needs a new direction,” Buchanan said in a statement. “Even Joe Biden said today that Washington is a broken system of government with out-of-control spending. Jason Altmire is part of the problem because he sides with liberals in Washington including Nancy Pelosi over families here at home.”

Buchanan was the U.S. Attorney for western Pennsylvania from 2001 until she stepped aside late last year to gear up for her congressional run.

In an e-mail, Altmire said that “this is not the time for campaigning.”

“While the Republican candidates focus their attention on partisan politics and winning the Republican nomination,” he said. “I will continue to focus my attention on doing the job I was elected to do.”

An ego is a terrible thing to waste. After she loses this, she can understudy George W. Bush playing the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz (“If I only had a brain”).

OMG…I heard she was running for Congress this morning. When will this cow realize she just needs to go away. This woman is the meanest, most evil individual in government today. I cheered when she resigned from the DOJ or whoever unfortunately she worked for. I CANNOT STAND THIS WOMAN AND NEITHER DO MANY OTHER PENNSYLVANIANS. She needs to just slither away and go back from under the rock from whence she came. GO AWAY MARY BETH. You have done enough damage already.

Why do appointed US Attorneys like Ms. Buchanan and Pat Meehan (ie Pres. Bush/Sen. Santorum cronies) think they’re qualified to go to Congress? What do they know about job creation and economic development?

As a Conservative, I would never vote for this woman. She is a political opportunist in the worst sense of the word. Altmire represents the people of his district well and he will get my vote.
