Another Dem emerges for Lt. Gov.
Almost two weeks after the state Democratic Party overwhelmingly endorsed Jonathan Saidel for Lieutenant Governor, a Centre County state lawmaker is gearing up for a late push at the second-ticket office.
State Representative Scott Conklin (D-Centre) is gathering signatures to get on the ballot, The Centre Daily Times reports. He is circulating nominating petitions both for Lt. Gov. and for reelection.
If he decides to get into the race full-throttle, he would face a steep uphill battle against Philadelphia City Controller Jonathan Saidel, who has been campaigning and raising money for over a year. Saidel easily won the state party’s endorsement earlier this month. Former Commonwealth Court Judge Doris Smith-Ribner is also running.

I hear that Hoeffel is going to drop down to Lt Gov. That should send the Saidel camp into a frenzy

If Hoeffel goes for Lt Governor, smart move, because he can not win the Governor seat.
Hoeffel beats Saidel hands down.

we are paying Scotty Cocklin’salary, as we always have been, for him to campaign for other offices. When he was a County Commissioner, he had staff members park in his reserved spot so that it looked like he was at work. He was never there. He was too busy managing his businesses in Pittsburgh. Go to one of them, you will likely see him. Even during the week when he should be earning his paycheck in Harrisburg. Give me a break. There should be a part-time legislature. They don’t do anything and waste(proper this time) a lot of our money.
What’s with the flowbee haircut?

I fully support Scott in this journey. It isn’t very often that you get a candidate from the middle of the state that has the drive and energy to run for an office like Lt. Gov. Maybe Abraham should check his facts before he posts. Scott did not own a business in Pittsburg. He owned a construction company in Phlipsburg PA that was sold over 15 years ago and his wife currently owns Conklins Barn and Antique Mall in Philipsburg. Scott is a rural candidated that will understand the problems affecting the rural areas of the state.

Drive over to permanti bros. On cherry way and get a real sandwich karl marx. And out of respect I will tell you directly what you really are… that shyster scotty self serving cocklin has a record of positioning himself for his own personal benefit and only a truly dedicated candidate has the courage and conviction to run for one office- not two. And that goes for all elected offices. So your position divides our democratic party. Scott can demonstrate his commitment by running for one office and giving up his seat as rep. Then he would be credible. My guess os that he is not courageous or commited and read this- he will not run for lt.gov and give up his seat. What party do you really work for karlo- and we have pretzels what here in pitt and in clarion. See you soon

Last time I checked it was anyone’s constitutional right to run for office and if no restrictions, more than one office. Not always the best appproach but Scott Conklin will make his choice soon.

I respectfully and strongly disagree with you Mr. Jacobson. It shows a lack of character, commitment and integrity by Scott Conklin. Is he the only qualified person to represent the 77th Legislative District?I thought he touts himself as a “reformer”? I don;t see reform here; just opportunism, which is the hallmark of his career.Maybe you should seek his seat this term. Hopefully, we will be discussing fielding and financing a candidate to take the seat in the 77th. After all- it is “not his seat”, but the “seat of the people” of our legislative district! And to begin to achieve true reform, we should oust this opportunist now. Then we can speak of a real accomplishment Mr. Jacobson. Thank you!

Well Seamus I like how you say my name, so we disagree, I just said he has a RIGHT to run, not that I support him. Anyway, it is good to see another good writer on this blog.

Well thank you Mr. Jacobson. I would like to see our local people reach out to candidates such as Mr. Saidel and determine what his positions are regarding rural issues. Several friends and I had the opportunity to meet with him a few months ago and honestly, he was more knowledgeable than some of our local reps in government. Everything is not as clear as it seems…I am certain that someone such as yourself would take the same opportunity to get to know candidates like Saidel (and sadly there are few). He is highly regarded in many circles and happens to be from Philadelphia. AS you know, in Philadelphia if you are not a registered Democrat, you have little chance of being elected. I would consider him a centrist with common sense, good judgment and well credentialed academically; fiscally conservative and socially liberal. It’s a shame he wasn’t born out here (just kidding). Anyway, keep up the good work-it’s a big state.

Saidel was nearly indicted a few years back, check the newsclippings or google it. He is not such a catch.

Hey Brett – They can indict a hot dog these days. He is definitely head and shoulders above all the candidates running for Governor. Seems to me that you are doing your thing for “other reasons”. By the way, they almost indicted President Clinton; should have indicted George Bush and someone shot the Pope…. Get informed and meet the candidate will ya?

Saidel was almost indicted for financial reasons, Clinton for having an affair, BIG Difference and meeting a con does not change the fact he is a con, they can be quite charming. It does not mean they are good to represent people for political office, especially in these times.

Seamus,
I took your advice and did some research. I have to say that Brett appears to be correct. I found that Jonathan Saidel was investigated several times by the Attorney General’s Office and the FBI.
The first time I could find was when he and is girlfriend conspired to steal money from his campaign account. The newspaper articles I found say that at first Saidel acknowledged authorizing the payment to his Girlfriend Diana Roca. When he found out it was illegal, then it became a loan. Then when charges were filed, he claimed not to know. This despite the fact that $5,000 of this money was funneled back to Jonathan, through his parents so that he could pay his taxes.
The next instance was in 2001 the Philadelphia Inquirer exposed that he was paid over a half of a million dollars by 2 law firms, while he was on the city payroll. The law firms said these payments were consulting fees in exchange for Saidel’s help in securing city contracts. One of the articles says that Saidel talked privately with then Mayor Street, about contracts for these firms.
The 3rd instance I could find, centered around Saidel’s steering contracts for the city’s pension fund to a big donor. At first he claimed under oath to have no knowledge of any contributions by the law firm. Then 5 days later, he sent a letter trying to change his story.
This is just what I found in one evening surfing the web. If you like, I can keep digging.
Yours truly,
Steve Buchanan
