Wagner hires a consulting team
Four months before primary voters go to the polls, state Auditor General Jack Wagner has hired a team of consultants to handle political strategy for his gubernatorial campaign.
Wagner has hired Bronstein & Weaver—a strategy and mail firm that has worked on local races in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York—to be his political advisers. David Dix, a Philadelphia-based political operative who has worked before with the firm’s partners, Michael Bronstein and Matthew Weaver, is also helping to develop and execute Wagner’s strategy.
The hires come with Richard Bryers serving as campaign manager, as he did for Wagner’s two successful auditor general races, and with Clint Eisenhower serving as director of policy and communications.
Wagner is expected to be an underdog in the money race, with Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato already unveiling big fundraising numbers and Philadelphia businessman Tom Knox looking to spend millions of his own cash. Though Wagner has had a reputation as being a reticent player in the raw politics of running for office, the recent consultant hires should prove helpful moving forward.
Bronstein and Weaver have recently won national recognition for their work in direct mail. They helped elect state Representative Tony Payton (D-Philadelphia), and spent last Fall working local races in Long Island. Dix was on Barack Obama’s national finance committee in 2008, and has worked on gubernatorial races on campaigns in Philadelphia.

Scared dem

Hate to say this, being a proud dem, but judging from the Mass results last night, we are in big trouble. Corbett has essentially an uncontested primary. I think it is time for the party to get behind a united ticket. Onorato-Doherty is our best chance to win. Onorato will get the west part of the state and Doehry will pull the northeast which is full of Casey dems who could go for Corbett. I cannot believe a repub is in Kennedy’s seat. Wagner is a good guy and so is Hoeffel – all of them are good. Don’t think an Onorato-Wagner ticket would fly because they hate each other so much and why would Wagner take LG when he already is a row officer? Dems are staring down the barrel of a gun and need to act fast to keep the gov mansion.

What this article doesn’t tell you is that David Dix is Africian American. He likes to tell people that he is in tune with the “community” and will help white politicians get votes. This while often sporting a bow tie and acting like an elitist.
If the firm’s biggest victory is working on Tony Payton’s election and some “local races in Long Island” it doesn’t say much. Tony’s district is heavily Democratic and his charisma and youth can be credited for his victory.
This hire shows nothing but Wagner’s inability to attract quality people on his political team.

If Knox ponies up a bunch of cash, I don’t see why he couldn’t present an attractive alternative to business-as-usual politics. He’s the only guy in the race who has created a job that wasn’t paid for by your taxes, and he’s essentially independent of major donors so his hands aren’t tied to any particular alliance.

Jack Wagner bled for his country. Jack Wagner is a lifelong Pittsburgher but did reside for five months in government lodings in the East: at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital because as a teenager he went out into the jungle with a rifle and some buddies and not much else. He is a pretty tough guy and he knows what he wants to do as Governor: which is to reform the many programs that are not working except to the extent that they benefit the insiders and big shots. If people want to help him do that, I think it is great. I do know that Jack Wagner has won statewide twice with huge margins not because of his consultants but because of who he is: the real deal.

Who cares who’s working for who? News flash: they ALL have consultants. But only the winning candidate gets to be Governor. I hope it’s Wagner.
