Toomey gets another primary challenger
Even though he’s effectively the GOP’s presumptive nominee for Senate, Pat Toomey got another primary opponent Monday in the form of Bedford County pharmacist John Kensinger.
Kensinger told Early Returns that he was spurred to run because of his opposition to health care reform legislation and the government’s response to the financial crisis. “I wanted to see us get back to the government that our founding fathers envisioned—more freedom and a smaller government,” he said.
Toomey is also running against conservative activist Peg Luksik and a couple of other super-underdog candidates. But months after state Republican leaders were casting about for an alternative candidate for Toomey, he has garnered an overwhelming majority of support from party insiders. He’s been winning caucus straw polls in landslides, and is expected to easily win the party’s nomination in May.
