The government-run health care disaster

As we already know, Scott Brown’s decisive victory in Massachusetts will have major implications in political races all across the nation. Republicans won a high turnout special election in one of the bluest states in the nation for a number of reasons. First of all, we had a great candidate who ran a very smart campaign. Scott Brown fed off of the public’s discontent with the business as usual Democratic political machine in Massachusetts and delivered a strong fiscally conservative message—his platform stressed lower taxes, stopping the out-of-control spending and, most importantly, voting “no” on the Democrats’ government-run health care plan.

Many Democrats want to lay the blame for this loss at the feet of their candidate, Martha Coakley. Listen, Coakley may not have been the best candidate to ever run for the U.S. Senate, but she wasn’t nearly as bad as the Democrats would have you believe. After all, she successfully ran a statewide campaign for Attorney General and won the Senate primary handily. Any attempts to discredit her as an unelectable candidate are simply false and meant to steal attention away from the real reasons they lost this race.

Some Democrats, including my friend and pa2010.com counterpart Abe Amoros in his latest post, are trying to spin this loss away from President Obama and his government-run health care plan. These assertions simply don’t pass the smell test. I was in Massachusetts talking to hundreds of voters and they are not happy with the direction President Obama and the Democrats are leading our nation.

The people of Massachusetts, who are already overtaxed, were concerned that the Democrats’ government-run health care plan spent too much money. Many were unhappy with the manner in which Democrats, including Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey, pushed government-run health care through on Christmas Eve while many Americans weren’t paying attention.

Democrats can try to ignore or create their own interpretation for the message the voters of Massachusetts were trying to send all they want, but they do so at their own peril.

As for how are treating their own candidates, you can look at the tire tracks on Martha Coakley, Creigh Deeds and John Corzine to see how quickly Obama and company threw them under the bus.

The question is can the GOP turn their image of being a party of corruption and of not having any reasonable ideas of solutions into more than just the normal mid-term election slump for the party of first term Presidents? I’m thinking that if the Democrats can hammer away at the GOP for their votes against health care and for reforming Wall Street and the banking industry, the Democrats can mitigate the damage. But, first on the agenda more than anything has to be jobs creation for the Democrats to be able to do that. Which is why the GOP is willing to kill jobs in order to have the shot at regaining some of the seats they lost the last two elections. And Scott Brown has promisded to be a jobs killer for the country.
