Specter’s support of Dawn Johnsen is old news

Specter’s promise to support Dawn Johnsen’s nomination to the Office of Legal Counsel was making waves all over the blogosphere and mainstream media Tuesday, but the truth is that I reported on this coming change of heart back in October. At a town hall meeting at the University of Pennsylvania, I personally asked Specter about his position on Johnsen, whose nomination has always been near and dear to my heart (full disclosure: Johnsen is an active member of the American Constitution Society, a progressive legal organization for which I am the Speaker’s Chair at Penn Law School).

At the time, Specter told us that, while he had initially opposed her nomination, he liked her positions on a woman’s right to chose, and her views on executive power, and that after a second meeting with her, and he was rethinking his decision. When he told he that “my vote may change if it is brought to the floor,” I knew at that moment that he was sending all of us a wink and a nod that his position on Johnsen had changed with his party affiliation.

Tuesday’s announcement just confirms what Specter implied back in October, and is another example of how we at pa2010.com are constantly working to keep you, our readers, ahead of the curve on the important news in this exciting Senate race.

If Specter supported the nomination back in October, why wasn’t it voted on and confirmed?
