Specter camp highlights Sestak’s comments on attendance, Reed
Senator Arlen Specter’s campaign was calling gaffe on Congressman Joe Sestak (D-7) this week, first showing us a video in which Sestak jokingly makes light of his need to go back to Washington to vote and later pointing us to a report that a senator who Sestak recommended for a leadership position is actually backing Specter.
The video, filmed by a Specter staffer and embedded above, shows Sestak wrapping up a recent event at Shippensburg University.
“The only reason I’m going back is, we have to make a quick ride to Washington D.C. We have votes at 6:30,” Sestak says.
“Somebody’s watching,” he adds with a chuckle, before pointing to the Specter staffer behind the camera and referring to him as “senator.”
The comment was seemingly a reference to the Specter campaign’s consistent hammering on the fact that Sestak has missed numerous votes while campaigning for Specter’s job, giving him the worst attendance record in the state’s congressional delegation. The Specter campaign wasn’t laughing, posting it on YouTube under the title “At Least He’s Voting” and e-mailing reporters with the subject line “Caught on Video.”
“Sestak admits he’s voting in Congress not because he wants to or because it’s his job but because his absenteeism is being watched,” the campaign wrote.
A Sestak spokesman brushed off the Specter camp’s reaction: “Ahhhh,” Jonathon Dworkin said, “a lack of a sense of humor, the importance of which President Eisenhower said, ‘…is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done.’”
Later, the Specter campaign noted that the man Sestak had casually offered up as a possible Senate leader, Rhode Island Democrat Jack Reed, is actually backing Specter. In a statement to Talking Points Memo, Reed’s spokesman says: “Senator Reed respects and appreciates Congressman Sestak’s service to the nation, but he strongly supports both Leader Reid as well as his colleague Senator Specter’s reelection.”

That’s funny that Jack Reed actually went out of his way to distance himself from Sestak and endorse Reid and Specter.
As for the video, my understanding is that the Sestak team tried to prevent the Specter staffer from filming. So Sestak’s “joke” is a little bit more defensive than he’s playing it off as.
The Specter campaign is stretching it to say “Sestak admits” why he is voting. However, it IS an admission that he’s concerned about how he is perceived and Specter’s needling.
Of course, everything Specter’s doing to Sestak are mere love-taps compared to the sh!tstorm of attacks Sestak will experience in the primary.
Do you have any idea of how many p!ssed off ex-staffers Sestak has (campaign and congress)? It’s a gold mine of stories.
SPECTER CAMPAIGN SUGGESTION FOR CAMPAIGN VIDEO:
Get a few dozen of these sex-taffers in a video, with sad, downtrodden looks (shoot in black-and-white)… these are the ex-staffers of Joe Sestak. Get a few to comment about working for less than minimum wage or how he yelled and screamed like a maniac. Then they can all brighten up (shift to color) and say they are supporting Specter.

I would hope this isn’t the best they have because it’s pretty weak. I thought the video was pretty funny.

Kevin-
With Sestak so far down in the polls, and a big state committee endorsement coming for Specter, they don’t need to hit Sestak with the hard stuff.
This lighthearted stuff shows that Sestak’s more of an entertaining diversion at this point, than a threat.
Sestak’s campaign has been one of constant attacks, whereas Specter’s campaign has focused on Arlen doing the job (and Sestak not). The Specter campaign isn’t taking a harsh tone with Sestak, which makes Joe look all the more shrill.

Oh this most assuredly not the hard stuff, Mr. Diano. I can guarantee you that Senator Specter has the “hard stuff” on reserve – in the (highly) unlikely event it proves necessary.

Hater-
Besides the criminal stuff that you allege (without making ANY supporting claims or background to Dan), there are plenty of Human Resources type behaviors that would be firing offenses or harassment in any other job.
They are enough to show that Joe treats his workers badly and doesn’t have the core beliefs of a Union/Worker-Rights progressive.
Do you attend any Democratic or campaign events where we might have met or might eventually meet?

Actually, I have furnished Mr. Hirschhorn with some (but by no means all) of the relevant information, Mr. Diano. Only so much I can provide without undermining ongoing efforts (or placing anyone in jeopardy). Mr. Hirschhorn should approach the…parties involved in this matter if he wants further details, documents, etc. They are willing to speak. I will ask one of the parties involved in this matter if they are amenable to meeting with you, Mr. Diano.
Of course,it is all moot anyhow. Probably won’t have to wait more than a few weeks…

Does it bother you that your inability to interacting appropriately with female staffers is the reason you were asked not to volunteer on several Democratic campaigns? I would tell you which campaigns, but everyone should just believe me because I say so… its kind of like you telling people you have talked to all these influential people who hate Sestak.

Hater-
If you have contacted Dan and identified yourself to his satisfaction, that’s good enough for me for the moment, though I’d like to see some substantiation.
Please try to reveal stuff that Dan can confirm (on background without jeopardizing sources) or at least is credible. We certainly don’t want to jeopardize or undermine anything that is ongoing.
I’ll be at the PA Progressive Summit this weekend, so feel free to ask any fellow “haters” to walk up and say “Hi.” to me.

HaverfordDemocrat-
This is the same BS that Mario tried laying on me, and claiming I was cut out of Sestak campaign early on. Then I came back with emails from Mario and other staffers, and even Sestak himself from late in the campaign showing that I was involved to the end.
I’m not sure who you consider “influential”. It’s committee people, former Sestak staffers, staffers on current campaigns, etc.
You should spend time talking to more Dems outside of the Haverford bubble.
I run into people all the time that say “He’s an @sshole.” And it takes no prompting than “What do you think of Sestak?”

Reading some of these posts by David causes me to laugh. Specter is consistently voted by his own staff as the Worst to work for in Roll Call magazine’s annual polls. He treats his staff like servants, according to objective accounts.

Unlike the extraordinarily congenial and warm Representative Sestak, who is noted for being exceptionally kind to lowly staffers. Such a benevolent man – not.

Rob-
1) Sestak has he highest turnover rate of ANYBODY.
2) I met people all the time who complain about Sestak. I get a completely different vibe from the Specter staffers I met (and the Specter staffers are more on the ball).
3) Specter pays his people more than twice the hourly rate Sestak does, when you take into account the number of hours. Many of Sestak’s staffers are making LESS than Pennsylvania’s $7.25/hour rate because they are working 30 hours a week of unpaid overtime.
4) Sestak doesn’t treats his staff like servants, but more like slaves, with the frequent verbal whipping.

I have personally called/visited Sen. Specter’s office with several constituent issues over the years. The employees always seem to be very content and happy. They were very intelligent and knowledgeable, and have gone above and beyond the call off duty to help me.
Furthermore, a number of them were long-standing older employees who have worked for the Senator for years. They spoke highly of their boss and had ample ideas and suggestions to assist this constituent.
Can anyway else say the same for Sestak’s people?

I can say that as a resident of the 7th and PA I have dealt with both Senator Specter’s and Congressman Sestak’s staffs. Each office was professional and well staffed. Each problem I sought help with was resolved. I would say that neither was better, although Sestak’s staff has handled both issues I went to them with in a more timely manner than Specter’s staff (that could be because they have less problems to deal with in one CD than in a whole state).
I am also sure that someone of Diano’s intellect would be able to go through financial disclosures (from campaigns and the House) and find out exactly how many staff have left (or stayed).
I went through his House campaigns and between reports and speaking to people who were involved figured out that there was a good amount of staff that work for Sestak during the campaigns.
In addition, I would like to know who you (Dave) speak to from the campaign. I regularly still talk to the organizer that handled my area (in ’06 and ’08) and each one has told me that NO ONE from either campaign talks to you. Please enlighten us. If Sestak is really the @ss you say he is I am sure that the staffers you talk to wouldnt mind burning the bridge (plus you say no one likes him, so bad mouthing him shouldnt hurt them with other jobs in the political field).

Haverford Dem-
While Joe has many people happy with the help they’ve gotten from his office, I’ve talked to a few people who were dissatisfied with the quality of service they got. They basically thought the kids were inexperienced and not up to the quality they hoped. It’s hard-working amateur hour.
I actually went through the staff lists, at legistorm.com It shows the date range the staffers were employed. Sestak has higher turnover. He also pays his staff a lot less.
I speak to former staffers that have left, and local politicos who have visited the office. They tell me stories about how bad he was and how he runs the office and abuses the staff. They ALL have similar stories. I was talking to a then-current staffer at the Haverford Dems June picnic who was appalled by the way Sestak treated some high school interns.
Some staffers don’t want to burn bridges on the record, probably because they fear retaliation if they use Sestak as a job reference. Others are working as staffers for other political candidates and don’t want to drag their bosses into a distraction.
Just tonight, at the PA Progressive Summit, I met a member of the young Democrats from our area. Turns out he worked for Sestak as an intern for college credit once. Sestak was so bad that he quit and gave up the credit, because it wasn’t worth the abuse.
Also, I was able to confirm from THREE sources what Hater has been talking about, that Sestak’s campaign has indeed been under investigation.
As I heard the story, a staffer for the local steel workers union (the only one to endorse Sestak) had observed money/check/funds going between the union and Sestak’s campaign. It may have been bonus checks to employees being converted/funneled to donations (I’m not 100% clear on that, but that was the impression I got). However, it was suspicious/improper enough to report it. The whistle-blower’s husband is a local professor. I heard the story from one his students, who was warned back in September not to get involved with Sestak’s campaign. The name of this professor was independently confirmed as the same one Hater is talking about. The third source is a current candidate running for office in the south east, who had heard parts of this story months ago (long before Hater started posting).
Now, I’m NOT saying that what this whistle-blower reported amounts to criminal behavior. I’ll leave that to the investigators. But, as far as I can tell, there has been an investigation underway for sometime. This has all been a surprise to me (kind of like finding an extra present under the tree).
Considering how nothing’s happened to Weldon after three years, I doubt that Sestak will suffer more than the end of his political career (which he seems to be handling himself anyway).
I did put Dan together with one of my sources here, to confirm some of what Hater sent him. So I’ll leave the evaluation of the details in his capable and professional hands.
