Sestak Gains Support of Philadelphia Building Trades Council Union
By SESTAK FOR SENATE
MEDIA, PA – Bricklayers and Allied Craft Workers Local Union 1 President John Phillips called Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Congressman Joe Sestak today to express his dismay regarding the announcement about Senator Specter by the Philadelphia Building Trades Council, of which John’s union is a member. John voiced his strong opposition to and surprise by any attempt to support Specter, saying he found out just yesterday about today’s event put on by members of the Council.
“The true blue Democrat in this race is Joe Sestak and I fully support his candidacy against the long-time Republican Senator Specter,” said John. “Joe has been there consistently to back union issues and working families, while Specter has let us down time and again, especially when it matters most. Whoever decided to have today’s event has their heads in the sand.”
“I appreciate John’s and the Bricklayers Union’s enthusiastic support for my campaign and everything he has done to fight for working families in the Philadelphia area,” said Joe. “As AFL-CIO President John Sweeney told me: it’s not labor, it’s about the working family. Instead of using his seniority to stand up for our working families, Specter voted for tax cuts for the very wealthy, against health care under SCHIP for children and pregnant low-income women, and four times against an increase in college tuition assistance. Now, his seniority is 97th and it is time for a new generation of leadership. I’m in this for the working families, and I stand clearly behind labor’s most important issues. Specter was totally opposed to labor’s two highest priorities — the Employee Free Choice Act and the health care public option — until I entered the race. Working Pennsylvanians deserve better and demand better.”
