Philly party, Lehigh Dems endorse Specter
Democratic Party ward leaders in Philadelphia endorsed Senator Arlen Specter’s reelection bid Monday, putting the machinery of the city party in the Republican-turned-Democrat’s political camp.
“The Democratic Party in Philadelphia is solidly behind Arlen Specter,” Congressman Bob Brady (D-1), the party chairman, said in a campaign statement. “Our elected officials and our ward leaders—they all understand how important it is to re-elect Arlen. He’s been an invaluable asset to the city and he’s earned our support.”
Specter, whose campaign said the endorsement was unanimous, welcomed the support of what has for decades been his adopted hometown.
“It’s a big boost to get the official support of my home town Democratic leaders,” Specter said in a statement. “Their support will help turnout a big vote in the city, which will help me and the rest of the Democratic ticket.”
The support of the Philadelphia party came on the heels of endorsements earlier on Monday from party leaders in the Lehigh Valley, including County Executive Don Cunningham, who was a candidate for governor last year.
“Arlen Specter has been a consistent moderate voice for Pennsylvania who has been more focused on results than politics, something we need more of in our country today,” Cunningham said in a statement. “In addition, in my 15 years in government in the Lehigh Valley, regardless of political affiliation, I’ve found him to be consistently engaged in and responsive to issues that affect our region. Keeping Arlen Specter in the U.S. Senate will be good for our country, our state and our region.”

That’s because they know Sestak doesn’t stand a “Snowball’s chance in hell of winning.” No one I know (and that’s a lot of people) are supporting Sestak.

It’s hard to do the strut and post at the same time.
Actually, Delaware is the only county I expected to endorse Sestak. Lehigh was the second most likely to endorse him, and now that’s fallen through.
Looks like it’s going to be 66 to 1. Ouch.
The real progressives realize that Sestak isn’t really one of us. He puts on a good show, but he hasn’t shown any real affiliation for the party itself. When he talks about issues, he comes off as rehearsed rather than genuinely passionate. When he does criticize, he’s repeating GOP talking points and undercutting Obama.

I don’t really have a dog in this fight that excites me too much. Arlen was a good Senator though I have over the years disagreed with him. Sestak has the potential to be a good Senator and is a formidable candidate in his own right.
I am sorry however to rain on everyone’s parade, but I do not think Arlen can excite the base enough to beat Toomey. Sestak has a better shot to do that.
Let’s see if all these leadership endorsements translate into the magic 2/3 governor ed installed after he got beaten in the endorsement by Senator Bob eight years ago.
The Philly ward Leaders is a good start for Arlen, but that was never in doubt with the establishment dem machine led by Brady. I agree with Diano (ugh) that DELCO will go for Sestak, but the rest is far from a lock…shocked if 66-1 is the tally!
Cant we get Sestak to go back to congress and beat meehan and lentz back to statehouse to beat whoever the rs are running?

Sestak couldn’t excite mice at a caffeine testing laboratory.
As for Sestak’s potential to be a good (fill in the blank), he is smart and capable, but his ego and management style prevent him from rising any higher (without a patron clearing the path). Also, the man he pretends to be on the campaign trail is too far from who he is behind the scenes and when he votes. In 2006, I voted for “Campaign Joe”. I was as disappointed as a kid with a crappy prize in his cereal box.
Specter will excite the base by making them realize that Toomey is farther to the Right than Santorum. In 2006, a lot of us were NOT excited by pro-lifer Bob Casey, but Santorum HAD to go.
As for Sestak going back to Congress, he’s too stubborn and has painted himself into a corner by tilting at windmills and declaring it a fundamental matter of principle. He really can’t back out without losing face. He HATES to lose face.
Quite frankly, it’s been obvious (to me) that Sestak dislikes being a congressman and accountable every two years. Six-months into his first term he was already whining and threatening not to run again if VOTERS kept criticizing him for his votes (like blank check to Bush on Iraq). He spent a lot of time working for Hillary’s campaign starting in 2007 (more than he ever did for all of Delco candidates combined).
Also, I’ve heard whispers that Sestak was sniffing around about a Senate run years ago. So, a House seat appears to have been only a stepping stone he had to tolerate for his real prize of a Senate seat. (Ironically, I run into people who think Joe wants to run for President in 2016 and use the Senate as a stepping stone.)
To the best of my knowledge, Lentz isn’t budging. He’s busted his @ss raising money after Joe abandoned the job and gave assurances he wasn’t coming back. Conner and Touey have also upended their lives to commit to an open primary seat.
As far as I’m concerned, Joe lost his place in line. Now Lentz, Conner and Touey are ahead of him.
The ONLY joy I could get from Sestak running for Congress would be to be in the room when Meehan got the news.

Considering how dead Sestak’s political career is, you might want to save that embalming fluid for him.

David-
That’s always been my impression of Sestak. A self-serving egomaniac. I’ve always thought that his ultimate goal was to be President and that his prior (and current) campaigns were just stepping stones.
Ever since he was “fired” from the Navy…

I was surprised by all the people that think he aspires to be President. He’s such a political lightweight in terms of his understanding of how the political system is a give and take, and you don’t crap on people on your way up.
He’s military mindset understands only overwhelming force, and not insurgency or really being an underdog.
In 2006, Sestak just relentlessly fundraised to make himself a bigger dog, rather than a better dog (then he voted like a blue dog on the War).
I’d really love it if Sestak would release his military records. I wonder how many complaints were filed against him?
BTW, have you noticed in his description of his navy “Captain’s calls”, that the meetings were really to take questions to clarify his orders. Not to get feedback from his men on doing things differently or what they wanted. It’s all about what Sestak had decided for them to do and telling them. Check out this recent interview, at timestamp 7:25 where he explains his Captain’s calls

I will never again vote for this scumbag Specter. Let’s count the ways this guy is a piece of garbage. First, he represented the hippie murderer Ira Einhorn, who killed his gf and stuffed her in a trunk in his apt. He later skipped bail and fled to Europe, where he lived for years avoiding prosecution for his crime. His single bullet theory is a joke, his reaction to Anita Hill and his explanation of racism was embarrassing. The way he derailed HillaryCare, but now champions ObamaCare shows what a pathetic hack he is, just like how he used to be against Card Check, but now supports it. What a tired, old fool. And he claimed less than a year ago that the GOP was out of touch with the people? How does he feel about being a Democrat now? His career is finished. He escaped in 04, but Toomey will finish the job this year. Arlen is an embarrassment to this state. In Jan. him and Rendell will both be gone. I hope that Democrat crook Murtha will be kicked out too.

Frank-
Never AGAIN?? vote for Specter?
You obviously voted for him AFTER the Ira Einhorn incident. So, you really sound pretty stupid complaining about it now.
The single bullet theory was even before that. Now you look even dumber for stating this as a reason you are no longer for Specter.
Specter’s been reelected twice since HillaryCare and three times since Anita Hill.
So, when was the LAST time YOU voted for Specter?
As for embarrassments, a right-wing hack like Toomey would be a major step backwards for Pennsylvania (and civilization in general).
