Philadelphia Building Trades Unanimously Endorses Senator Arlen Specter

By ARLEN SPECTER FOR SENATE

Today in front of an overflowing crowd of more than 200 supporters, the 77,000 member strong Philadelphia Building Trades Council unanimously endorsed Sen. Arlen Specter for re-election during a rally at the Sprinklerfitters Union Hall in northeast Philadelphia.

Philadelphia Building Trades President Pat Gillespie called Senator Specter a “seasoned veteran,” and praised Specter’s career-long fight to create jobs, protect workers’ safety, raise the minimum wage, and rebuild Pennsylvania’s infrastructure. “This is an important person to have working for our members,” Gillespie said.
Philadelphia Building Trades is comprised of 42 member unions representing 77,000 workers. Last week their Executive Committee voted unanimously to endorse Specter for re-election.
“I am proud to stand with the fine men and women of the Philadelphia Building Trades as we work to rebuild Pennsylvania and America. Your support today gives my campaign a big boost, and I very much appreciate your unanimous decision to endorse me,” Specter said. Specter re-emphazised his critical vote to pass the Economic Reinvestment and Recovery Act, which will help create or save 143,000 jobs in Pennsylvania, including many in the building trades. Specter added, “I pledge to you that I will continue to fight.”
Wayne Miller, head of the Sprinklerfitters Union, thanked Senator Specter for being a reliable voice in Washington. “I can aways count on him. I can always say, Senator Specter will be with us, and I thank him for that.”
This is the first major endorsement by organized labor in the Democratic Senate primary.
