Hufford wants to bring independents back to Republican Party
By HUFFORD FOR CONGRESS
Republican candidate Walt Hufford (R-Chester County, PA) wants to bring
Republican-leaning independents back to the Republican Party.
“As a Party, we need to get back-to-basics by focusing on fiscal
conservatism,” Hufford said. “Over the last decade, the national Party lost
direction and focus. The consequence of that behavior contributed to the loss of
good Republicans from our ranks. Nationally, the percentage of people who
identify themselves as Republicans has dropped significantly, while the
percentage of voters who consider themselves independents has increased
dramatically. I believe we have a tremendous opportunity in 2010 to bring these
voters home and significantly increase the number of voters who are registered
as Republicans.”
Hufford cited a May 2009 Gallup poll that showed a 5% decline in the
number of voters who identified themselves as Republican in 2009 versus 2001.
Other national polls have shown similar results. A November 30, 2009
Washington Post poll showed the lowest number of voters identifying themselves
as Republicans since 1981.
Hufford said his campaign would make a major effort to communicate
with Republican-leaning independents and urge them to register as Republicans
for the May election. “By and large, these voters are fiscal conservatives, but
centrist on other issues. They reject the hyper-partisanship that has plagued
Washington. They want someone who will speak out for Republican positions,
but who will actively engage on issues like climate change, renewable energy
and environmental protection. With my background in the energy and
environmental fields and my pragmatic approach to government and the issues,
I know I can attract these critical voters back to our Party. It is clear the
independent voters will decide who will win this seat in November. “
Hufford said increasing the number of registered Republicans in May will
help the entire Republican ticket in November. “I’m a strong believer in a Big
Tent Republican Party that welcomes voters with differing opinions on the issues,
but who share a belief in the value of the individual, in the importance of free
markets and in limited, fiscally conservative government.”
Hufford’s campaign web site, www.huffordforcongress.com, will include a
link to a downloadable voter registration form. “In order to vote in the May
Republican primary, voters will need to register as members of the Republican
Party. Even if they are registered to vote, they must declare themselves as
Republicans in order to vote. This is a critical election year and it’s important for
voters to make their voice heard and help shape the future of our area and our
nation by selecting candidates who can go to Washington and deliver for the
voters of our District.”
