Doherty says he’s raised $1.1M, about two-thirds of it from mayoral race
Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty’s campaign said Friday that it had raised $1.1 million in 2009, a sum including money brought in for his reelection race that can now be used for his gubernatorial bid.
The campaign said it had raised almost $675,000 for his mayoral race, and another $441,000 for his gubernatorial race. The latter total was a bit more than Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel raised at the end of the year, but since Doherty was gearing up for a statewide run even before he won reelection in November, it remains unclear exactly when he started raising money for the governor’s race.
The campaign did not say how much cash it had on hand at the end of the year, information that will be published in campaign finance reports next month. But since Doherty won the Democratic nomination for reelection while also winning the GOP nomination as a write-in, it’s likely that the spent lightly for the November race.
“I am very pleased at the support we received last year,” Doherty said in a statement. “As the only candidate in the governor’s race who had to run in both a primary and a general election in 2009, we faced some unique challenges. The total we raised is a tribute not only to the success we’ve enjoyed in Scranton, but to the dedication and hard work of our supporters. I know we still have a lot of work to do, and with our focus entirely on the governor’s race, I’m looking forward to a great 2010.”
The disclosure makes Auditor General Jack Wagner the only Democratic candidate in the race who has yet to release any specific fundraising numbers before next month’s reports. Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato’s campaign said he’s raised more than $8 million for the race, which includes about $2 million leftover from his 2007 reelection.

Doherty looks like the only real opposition to Onorato now, but he cannot win unless Hoeffel steps aside.

As I understand it, he is running on his record of being the supervised custodian of an Act 47 city. I believe that Doherty himself likened that status to a ‘roach motel’ because he is unable to get the city out of Act 47 supervision which, as we all know, allows the city to engage in ‘bankruptcy-like actions.’ I really fail to see this as a compelling rationale for stepping up unless Ed Rendell’s final act is to put Pennsylvania into federal receivership. At that point, Doherty’s experience puts him head and shoulders over everyone else.

More BS from GOPHAWK, who has no concept of what it means to be under Act 27.
Full disclosure: I went to college with Doherty 30 years ago. Haven’t spoken to him in years, but he has done wonders in Scranton. He’s got bigger balls than the other candidates in this race, that’s for sure- submissive to entrenched union and political party interests, he is not.
I agree with “Wow” that Doherty is really the only candidate with a chance to take out Onorato, because of his personal and political qualities, his location as the only Northeast candidate, and the fact that he can raise some (enough?) money.
However, I would not rule out an Onorato-Doherty ticket. That’s probably the Democrats’ best shot.

Pete what wonders did Doherty do? Hiring drug addicts, theives and drunks.Look at the debt he put scranton in! He actaully has no balls he is a coward and I know this from dealings with him.Look at the police and fire union he has been jerking around for 8 years his people get raises. Why not them, they are fathers, husbands etc.His reputation as a strong figure is gone and every one else running against him knows this.I would tell any one you went to school with him,he is not so well liked.
