Cawley chuckles at criticism of southeast endorsement (Updated)
LANGHORNE—Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley, who’s increasingly emerging as a leading Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, thinks that any criticism of how he won the endorsement of southeast GOP leaders is just unfair.
Addressing complaints about the endorsement process here Saturday, Cawley looked like he was holding back some chuckles.
“Seems that the less votes my rivals got the more critical they were of the process,” he told pa2010.com. “The southeast leaders have conducted themselves in this manner for many years. As Republicans, we’ve always been in favor of letting people govern themselves in the way they see fit. It’s a formula that works.”
As for his prospects of eventually winning the nomination? “I can’t remember the last southeast endorsed candidate who didn’t win.”
UPDATE: Cawley clarifies that he doesn’t think criticism of the endorsement process is “silly,” a word he did not use in the interview. Rather, he sees it as unfair coming at this stage. “I understand that there might be frustration when, as a candidate, your message isn’t being as positively received,” he says. “But the simple reality is that this is the way the southeast [caucus] has conducted its business for years, and that’s something that was known by the candidates. Criticism of the process becomes unfair when we were all playing by the rules of the caucus.
Also, this article incorrectly interpreted a quote by Cawley. In saying he couldn’t remember the last time a southeast-endorsed candidate didn’t eventually win, he was referring to winning the overall primary, not to winning the state party’s endorsement.

Cawley was smart to make a statement. Too bad he confirmed these shenanigans have gone on for years and he’s OK with this. Proof he’s not ready for prime time.

This guy is a complete hack. He worked asd a senate staffer before being annointed by thr powers at be for his current position. He has no real world experience and his demeanor towards people frustrations is telling. Word is a certain financier tried to make a power play for Cawley and now he is backing off because people are discovering his unethical past. This guy can be written off.

Looks like Cawley had to complain twice about his “misquotes”. Clearly, this guy is not ready for primetime.

Bucks county government is a serious mess.
This county has not been reassessed in over 35 years. This amounts to stealing they are stealing thousands from people every year. Cawley has no plan to reassess.
The land use laws in this county are socialism. You can’t do anything dig a hole or cut down a tree without permission.
The government is buying and holding land. That is always a mistake, the people should own the land.
A 12.5% raise for a director. Note he donates a lot of money to the party each year. We are in a recession and most people are getting no raise.

I see this article as proof that Cawley is ready for the big show. He explained his position well and it seems that Dan could not get his facts straight which is a shame but honest mistake. Cawley is a former small business owner and brings a wealth of experience to the table. Let’s face the fact that Bucks is going to be a battleground for this election. Aichele lost her last election, Watkins has not even won a committeemen election in Philadelphia. Cawley is the proven winner here.

To Let’s Roll:
Aichele held taxes at bay recently despite her earlier hiccups. She’s well respected in Chester County and the Commonwealth. But the true knock on Ms. Aichele in this cycle is that she is not very good on the stump which Corbett is gonna need. Watkins has been a quiet force for Republican causes locally, statewide and nationallly.
People find it utterly amusing when they hear other people saying this guy should start slow and work his way up. He’s done that already, starting 28 years ago. So much so that he’s been a speaker at 2 Republican National Conventions (2000, 2008), been on a Presidential transition team (Bush 41) and served the 1st President Bush.
Now he and his family are into their 2nd generation of building the Republican brand. This is a dynamic family, not just one guy folks thinks needs to go to political grade school.
The rest of the country know the Watkinses very well, including a grateful Bush family….many people in Philadelphia also know about this emerging dynasty. That would include small business owners who’ve benefitted from Joe’s wife being the SBA Regional III administrator from 2005-2008 and his work advising, building and starting small businesses.
So, if we’re informed about Watkins, what’s going on with the folks who keep thinking Watkins brings nothing to the table and should run for committeeman???

Could not agree more with your assestment of Aichele. She will make a great deputy education czar. Watkins lost in Indiana and again in 1994 when he ran as a moderate. Now he is captain conservative making another go of it. So I find it funny that a guy who has won nothing is the real deal but people like Aichele, Cawley, Kennedy, DiFrancesco all have won something. Even Beiler took one for the team in the Auditor General race. Congrats to Joe for being employed an knowing the Bushes. The Bush connection is the last thing we need in this election. At least we know that now before state committee. And yes Joe should be a member of the Philadelphia City Committee. If he was then he probably would have registered one vote at least from the straw poll.
Meet the Facts...
Jan 24th, 2010
You could not agree more with the fact that Ms. Aichele is respected by the Commonwealth and Chester County???? Strange. Most would. If you’re just now learning about Watkins and his Bush connection, I would not have let people know that if I were you.
Folks have known it for years, including many of the State Committee people who will gladly vote for the him or anyone else they deem capable of being the LG candidate. It called vetting.
And Joe did get votes from the SEPA Caucus, sad thing was, Mr. Fact Checker, they did not have a chance to register it. That’s what makes Cawley’s “win” so hollow to the rest of Pa.
As some understand it, Philadelphia City Committee has never let him be a member as they have never respected him. Gave him lip service, listened to him speak, even encouraged him to run for office only to undercut him. So it’s beyond bizarre for you now to suggest Watkins SHOULD be a member of City Committee when they barely recognized his existence over the past 20 years.
Luckily a precious few there like him and are puzzled about the events of a few days ago…that might have been the best rejection the man got….proof he’s not controlled by this organization that likes to cut deals instead of playing to win.

To Fact Checker,
Apologize for first sentence in my retort. We agreed on Aichele. I rescind my first question. The rest of my thoughts after Aichele challenge stand, however.

Meet the Facts…
Glad we agree on Aichele.
It seems we are destined to agree to disagree but I do appreciate your well thought out and respectful responses. I will gladly follow on your retort.
I have attended the three main City Committee events: The Fall and Spring Cocktail Parties and the Clambake every year since 1998. However, I did not attend one of the cocktail parties in 2002. Never once did I see or even hear of Mr. Watkins attendance at these events. I highly doubt City Committee encouraged Watkins to run against Rick Santorum unendorsed in the Primary of 1994. I also do not recall his name ever being mentioned for City Council or Mayor. So I don’t know what office you are talking about. Please feel free to enlighten me though. My feeling is that no matter what if you are a tried an true Republican you should make the effort on the smallest scale to be a member of the GOP organization where you reside. Philadelphia has over 3000 committee spots. Joe could have helped fill one. Any insight you may have on why not helping out his party and community would be appreciated. Now if Joe is so well known by State Committee why hasn’t he won a caucus yet? Usually when a candidate is being vetted they have someone behind them with voting power. The last point I have is Joe going to drop out if he doesn’t win the endorsement?

To Trunk Man 19149,
Thanks for the sentiment at the beginning. We agree to disagree. The points and issues you’ve raised, you already know I bet….But…..
….not helping out his party or his community is easily answered with a sit down Q and A with the candidate. That would be enlightening. Try it sometime. Some events you made he made, just in different years or you just did not see him. The fact that you did not hear about him I cannot help.
On the last point, again, ask him and his campaign. Then stay tuned…..

All this back and forth is tiring….just check the candidates websites and call the campaigns. Grill ‘em, grill ‘em hard. One of these folks could be your Governor in 10 years or so.
Then go to the caucuses and witness the deliberations if you can….then bring a couple of sandwiches, chips and a soda and hang out in the lobby at State Committee, see how the wind blows.
The top 3 LG’s are set no matter what the history. They’d better all step up. This cycle is a really big deal, we can all agree on that….

What a whiny arrogant guy. That is the way it “always” is done. This is part of the problem! People like Cawley and the leaders do not understand that they are not listening to the people. They cut these back room deals and expect the people to follow. Remember this is the peoples election not the SE leaders.

Relax man its an endorsement. The people will have their say in the primary.

Cawley just got dealt a very bad hand today with Rizzo getting in. If Watkins got no votes in SEPA, and Cawley won, Frank just muddied the waters for Cawley.
If Watkins can make a strong showing in the West and the Northeast Caucuses in a few days….he would then have a big window of opportunity to get the nod…..’cause SEPA looks totally confused and backwards now to the rest of the State, and Watkins is smelling like a rose….and a winner.
The key is Watkins has to deliver. The videos, the meetings, all that sexy stuff now has to translate into Caucus and State Committee endorsement votes. The plot thickens….
Rizzo to the Rescue

Rizzo in the race means the end of Watkins and Aichele. Cawley has enough support to stand strong. This is coming down to two guys. Cawley and Rizzo.

To Rizzo to the Rescue,
It’s down to Cawley and Watkins.
There’s a whole State out there that does not know Rizzo other than the fact that his dad was who he was. They don’t know this Frank Rizzo.
They DO know Aichele, Cawley and Watkins. They’ve seen them, they break bread with them. I’m betting most have already made a decision and are waiting to get confirmation from their candidate when they see them again at their caucuses making the final pitch.
Rizzo’s learning curve is steep to say the least. If the LG race were just in SEPA and no where else, you’d have a very good point.

If SEPA has already voted why so many complaints. Cawley is respectable. He is a good working honest man. I have talked with him on numerous occasions and he is very friendly, down to earth and well read. He does have real world experience and yes he is some one who worked for the party when he was young. EXCUSE ME! What is wrong with that, if we punish ever people especially YOUNG people who volunteered or working for the party for VOLUNTEERING. What kind of message are we sending to the young republicans and other young people trying to get involved. Remember this party needs more young people to be involved. Not the other way around.
Common sense.
