A day of gubernatorial endorsements

Tuesday was chock-full of endorsements for the Democratic candidates for governor, with Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, Auditor General Jack Wagner and Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel all rolling out newly-announced supporters.

Onorato trekked from Easton to Allentown, winning the backing of, among others, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski, Easton Mayor Sal Panto and city council members from both towns. He was also endorsed by political leaders from southeastern Pennsylvania’s Latino community, starting a “Latinos for Onorato” initative.

“Dan is committed to revitalizing our economy and helping businesses create new jobs, especially in next generation industries and ‘green’ jobs,’” Pawlowski said in a statement. “If Pennsylvania is going to be able to create jobs and once again be a national economic leader, we need a governor in Harrisburg who not only understands our area and the Lehigh Valley, but understands how important it is to focus on creating next-generation jobs.”

At the same time, Hoeffel was traveling from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia to formally kick-off his campaign. At a stop in Harrisburg on the way, was endorsed by numerous members of the state legislature including state Representatives Josh Shapiro, Tim Briggs, Rick Taylor, Matt Bradford, Greg Vitali and Mark Cohen. Shapiro and Briggs both used to work for Hoeffel when he served in Congress.

And Wagner continued to rack up the support of county party leaders with an endorsement from Montour County Democratic chair Henry Coira. Wagner has now won the backing of a dozen county party chairs.

“We back Jack because he’s been a great friend to northcentral Pennsylvania for years, and he’ll be a Governor we can truly count on,” Coira said in a campaign statement.

Onorato does not have a good record on jobs. Allegheny County lost 20,000 jobs last year and there are fewer jobs in Allegheny County today than there were the year before Onorato took over the Allegheny Executive office. By contrast, Montgomery County has held onto its job gains over Joe Hoeffel’s tenure.
Joe is a friend of working people.

That was last year. US Steel is building a new plant in Allegheny County and Dicks Sporting Goods is moving its corporate headquaters there. At the very least the new steel plant will bring jobs for local residents. Dick’s will create new and affluent residents creating a stronger local economy.
