More on Meehan and Christie
Each time that I write about the lack of minorities in the Republican Party, someone points out that I’ve missed something. This time it’s James Kelly, who comments on my previous post that there are in fact a lot of local GOP minority officeholders in Delaware County and that the party is on the rebound.
I don’t doubt that there are many such people and will be more in the future. The point is that you don’t see many minorities who aren’t candidates or officeholders–that is, who don’t essentially have to be there–at Republican events. Until you do, the party is going to be at a disadvantage, having essentially to run the table among white voters in order to win elections. It’s an OK recipe for off-year contests, when turnouts are low and minority turnouts lower. Whether it is enough to elect a President, and a Congress, remains to be seen.
