Day 2 at the Pa. Society: A live blog
NEW YORK—It’s another freezing-cold winter day here in midtown Manhattan at the Pennsylvania Society weekend. We tried to give you play-by-play coverage of yesterday’s events in our first live blog. We hope you enjoy spending the day with us again.
Like before, if you’re in New York, send us your dispatches.
7:47—About to head to the Penn Club for the University of Pennsylvania’s annual breakfast. Along with some other stuff this morning, this is off-the-record, so don’t expect to hear anything else about it. Word was Joe Sestak and Arlen Specter would be in attendance, but now Specter seems to be stuck in Washington as the Senate debates health care. After the breakfast, we’ll swing by the Pennsylvania Manufacturer’s Association event, gab with Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6) and then it’s back to the Waldorf for another busy day.
9:38—Just left the Penn event. loke i said earlier, it was off the
record. But I can tell you that it was easily the most high-powered crowd of the weekend so far.
9:42—In a cab heading to PMA and chat with Congressman Jim Gerlach.
10:30—Finished nice chat with Gerlach.
10:39—Saw Joe Hoeffel courting Mark Aronchick. Convincing heavyweight Dem fundraisers that he can win is a top priority for Hoeffel.
10:43—Back to the Waldorft to chat with Chris Doherty.
11:32—Chris Doherty can talk policy with the best of ‘em. Taking a quick breather before a busy afternoon… Corbett, Watkins, Doherty, Dent and more on deck.
11:46—Gonna take a breather before a swamped afternoon.
12:14—So much for that breather, off to Tom Corbett’s event. Spending the afternoon with our new digital media strategist.
12:33—Tom Corbett’s event is packed. Lou Barletta’s there. At least three Lt. Gov, candidates (Steve Johnson, Joe Watkins, Jim Cawley). Corbett says he won’t get involved in that primary process for a while, if at all.
12:39—In a cab, off to Chris Doherty’s event.
12:56—Just got to Doherty. PACKED. Lou Barletta was on his way out. I hear I just missed John Callahan. Mary Isenhour’s here.
1:03—OK, only one problem at Doherty’s event: the restaurant booked a kid’s party at the same time. Worse things have happened.
1:37—The Doherty family is so Brady bunch picturesque it’s stupid.
1:41—Heading to Benjamin Hotel to sit down, pump out some stories, and then to Joe Watkins’ event.
2:18—Lots more stories on the home page now. And Alex reports that Dave Argall may indeed challenge Tim Holden.
2:20—Senate update… they’re in town?
3:07—Did a video interview with Joe Wakins, the first of many for our new media strategy. Stay tuned for details.
3:43—Went to Charlie Dent’s reception. Lots of PA-6 candidates. Schroder made a wise crack about Welch. details later.
4:00—Dropping by Buchanan Ingersoll real quick… then taking a break for real!
4:10—OK, break time. No more posts till MUCH later. Our new media strategist Ben Barnett is still on the scene.
8:34—Napping never felt so good, Quick eat, a few more stories to write and the it’s party time.
10:01—Just posted a bunch more stories. Specter and Casey are here but seem to be laying low. Will write about Corbett being courted and rumor wrap-ups later. Time to throw on a suit and go party. Less hard-news content from here on out.
10:29—All suited up and now it’s back to the Waldorf for the real homestretch.
10:57—Ran into Daylin Leach. He took exception to Patrick Murphy saying he has the “hottest wife here.” Leach motions at his wife and says “I’ll throw down with anyone.”
12:17—Wow, sorry so busy… saw everyone at their mother at gov’s reception. met with Corey o’brien campaign manager, now it’s on to energy event.
11:17 the next morning—And almost 12 hours later, we’re closing this up. That’s all for us folks. Stay tuned for complete wrap-up coverage.

What’s the word with Dawn Stensland shoutting off about PA pols in NYC? Is this how she launched her political career?

*This event just added!*
Dave Diano will sing karaoke to several show tune classics in the historic Waldorf Astoria lobby. “I just feel limiting myself to blogging isn’t allowing me to publicly humiliate myself quite as much as I’d like. I hate Sestak.” Diano stated. “Moving forward, I’ll be looking to branch out into more events to further discredit and embarrass me and my family. Sestak is a carpetbagger.”

Live from the Waldorf-
I was thinking about doing a juggling act with all the votes Joe sold us out on, but I can’t juggle that many betrayals. Then, I decided to get a ball for each of the 67-counties in PA and juggle the ones Sestak would win. But, juggling one ball (Delco) is not very entertaining.
“Live”, I heard that later this evening YOU will be jumping out of a birthday cake for Sestak and offering him a lap dance.
How could I compete with a show like that?

Dan—
Me too last night, i did a couple sam adams and checked in on your excellent reporting.
I agree, I think Sestak the Carpetbagger would be a great title “Live”.
Will “Live” be offering a massage and happy ending? … Might be a good idea to have “Live” jump out of a giiant carpet bag, as opposed to a cake.

My impression so far…Barletta is everywhere, Doherty creating the most buzz, Wagner making a good showing. Where’s Onorato and Knox? They both seem to be mailing it in.

IMO, Doherty has picked up the most credibility this weekend.
Now, let’s see if any money starts coming in for him.

Gina and prddem-
What is Doherty doing “right” or “better” that you are picking up on?

Gina-
Interesting. I first heard of Doherty six months ago from a friend of mine that was impressed, but didn’t think he’d really pull-the-trigger and run.
Well, I’ve yet to meet Wagner. I like Hoeffel from a progressive policy perspective. Knox seems like decent guy, but I haven’t had the opportunity to hear him speak on a range of issues.
Hoeffel has Montco as a “base” with good name recognition in Philly, and the suburbs.
Doherty’s from a smaller more rural county. Still SE PA vibe, but less “base”.
Knox is well known in SE from having run for Philly Mayor.
Wagner has a name everyone can spell correctly the first time.
