Carney endorses Trivedi in 6th District primary

Carney endorses Trivedi in 6th District primary

Congressman Chris Carney (D-10) became the first member of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation to endorse Manan Trivedi for Congress on Thursday, giving Trivedi his most high-profile backer yet as he seeks to convince party insiders it’s not too late for him to make up ground against primary front-runner Doug Pike.

“Through his work as a physician, healthcare reform advocate and military officer, Manan Trivedi has shown an admirable dedication to service,” Carney, himself a Navy Reserve commander, said in a statement. “He has the real-life experience to help fix our country’s health care system and lead the people of Pennsylvania’s 6th District to new economic opportunities. His experience serving on the front lines in the Iraq war gives him invaluable perspective on issues of foreign policy and national security. We may not agree on every issue, but I can say without question that Manan Trivedi will be the type of congressman we so desperately need.”

Several other members of Congress, as well as powerful state lawmakers, had already endorsed Pike when Trivedi got into the race in September. Since then, Pike’s campaign has continued to build momentum and important political infrastructure, even as Trivedi’s supporters have sought to put together his own group of backers, occasionally convincing party insiders who had endorsed Pike early to get back on the fence or even switch sides.

I didn’t realize that Carney was Navy Reserve.

Will vets Sestak, Murphy and Murtha from the PA delegation follow suit and endorse?
(Sestak probably wouldn’t endorse without an exchange endorsement.)

    Murphy already endorsed Pike.

    Kevin-
Thanks. Murphy endorsed Onorato the other day. I didn’t realized he had endorsed for Pike already.

This is a big for Trivedi, and I think Pike will have a difficult time countering this endorsement. Elected officials have an innate sense when to jump aboard a campaign and when to jump off. Pike isn’t done, but the momentum going into 2010 is with Trivedi.

Trivedi still has a very uphill climb. Pike still had the bulk of support having already been endorsed by four Southeast Members of Congress – Murphy, Schwartz, Fattah, and Brady. Sestak won’t endorsement is my guess.

It’s a good “get” for Trivedi, but Carney’s not as local as SE reps who are better known.

A lot of these endorsements are coming early. It just occurred to me: now what??

For example, Frank came out for Sestak the other day. It don’t expect him to come back to PA to campaign/fundraise for him. It was likely a one-shot.

Besides make endorsement statement (when no one is paying attention but the insiders), what are the endorsers doing to support the candidates? Is it just lip service?

Their names can be listed on outgoing lit and emails, but is there any other ONGOING activity by these endorsers, especially later in the game?

Pike collected a lot of party support (Brady & State Party people) after the August State Committee meeting. February will be very, very interesting.

Dave how could you forget about Murphy he’s been the biggest support of Pike since he began a few months back!?

This is bigger than people realize. I can’t ever remember Carney getting involved in a primary like this.

Pike’s campaign manager is Andrew Eldredge Martin, who you may remember from the DailyKos controversy.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe Andrew ran Carney’s first campaign in 2006.

    Major “f-you” to Andrew.

Gina – The endorsement seems to be more due the Navy connection than anything else. It seems rather disingenuous to turn it into something else.

If it’s the Navy connection, why hasn’t he endorsed Sestak?

“Dave how could you forget about Murphy?”

Because I wasn’t paying attention to the race until Trivedi got in and it actually became a race. An endorsement without a challenger wasn’t really news. You’re endorsing them over an empty chair.

You might as well just hold a mirror up to their mouth to see if you get any fog.

    Gina-
Andrew having being the campaign manager shouldn’t be the criteria for Carney’s endorsement anyway. I doubt it’s relevant.

It’s not relevant, but it certainly is interesting.
