Thoughts on 2009… and 2010

I’d like to refocus again on last wee’s elections. As much as I think that they show at least a little discontent with the liberal agenda, no one seems to agree with me. In Pennsylniva, Joan Orie Melvin’s win at least gives some energy in the idea that well-run Republican campaign can win a statewide election.

In 2010, my eyes are on two states, Connecticut and Florida. In Florida, a Marco Rubio victory in the Senate primary over Governor Charlie Crist will be the end of the road for me. Honestly, one congressional seat is bad enough. Losing a contested seat for party cleansing purposes disgusts me.

In Connecticut, the Republican Party actually has a chance to keep the Governor’s Office. Gov. Jodi Rell, who’s not seeking reelection, is really popular. I think that with the Democratic Attorney General and best statewide candidate sitting out 2010, most likely in favor of Lieberman-2012 challenge, a strong candidate for governor, combined with a strong candidate against Chris Dodd, would be a good chance for a pickup. The real reason however that I bring up the Nutmeg State is party-cleansing. What if a conservative figure sweeps the GOP primary for Governor. That hurts the candidate for Senate’s chance.

This is the kind of state the Republican Party needs to be careful in. The kind of state they can control for the sake of building a needed base, so they can move forward in building a national agenda that is electable in the near future.

Is it clear that Rubio will lose in Florida? Connecticut is a different story.
