My reservations on Tom Corbett

Its not Bonusgate… I promise.

I just instinctively have had a problem with Tom Corbett. I didn’t know quite what it was, but it was always there. And recently, I realized—could it really be that obvious?

I love prosecutors. They keep us safe, and that keeps us sane. But, other than “office managing” and “keeping me safe” what have they really done?

Nothing, really.

It’s not that I don’t think Tom Corbett would make a good governor, and it’s not that I don’t think he is a better alternative to Democrats, like Chris Christie clearly was to Jon Corzine. But I feel like what prosecutors do just doesn’t fit for the Governor’s Mansion. And trust me, I’d be the first to defend Tom Corbett’s Bonusgate investigation.

That is why I think Jim Gerlach is the better choice for now.

When Corbett wins the primary, because he probably will, I’ll gladly support him. But Gerlach is not too conservative like Sam Rohrer, and not inexperienced in governance like Corbett.

He just makes more sense.

You are probably too young to remember him, but Dick Thornburgh was one of the finest governors that PA has ever had. Before being elected Governor, Mr. Thornburgh was the US Attorney for Pittsburgh – a prosecutor.

The election, like it or not, will be won or lost on the issue of the economy. The candidate who can offer the most compelling vision of the future of PA’s economy is sure to win. A prosecutor has nothing to say, no achievements to point to on that front. It will be almost too easy for Democrats to credibly claim that the classic GOP economic recipe – tax cuts targeted at rich people and the big business end of the small business tax code, selling off the social safety net and the rest of the government, deregulation of all industries (which will be fantastically unpopular because of electricity rate hikes)- will not result in broadly shared prosperity, because that was Bush’s plan and everyone knows how that turned out. The message that Corbett will do for PA what Bush did for the US will be especially effective. He, and the rest of the GOP field, will also have to toe the line in support of the Bush economic record in the primary, leaving them sitting ducks in the general. Corbett is especially vulnerable because his base support is lukewarm and it will not be difficult for the Democrat to fill in the gaping hole of his economic record with the royalist agenda people hate about Republicans.

for jeff, i think being us attorney is a little bit of a different ballgame though, simply put. it sounds trivial, i admit, but the difference in career path and administrative duties makes that situation a little different, i feel.

Tom Corbett was also a US attorney?

My bad. Quite frankly,I’m tired of seeing ads about prosecutions. The real fact behind my generalization here is that Tom Corbett hasn’t said a thing. Hes got endorsements, money, and a great history, but what will he do to create jobs? Honestly…
