Joe Hoeffel Calls on Attorney General Tom Corbett to Protect ALL Citizens
By HOEFFEL FOR GOVERNOR
“As Pennsylvania’s top enforcer of the law, Pennsylvania Attorney General, Tom Corbett should be aggressively advocating for laws that protect ALL of Pennsylvania’s citizens,” said Joe Hoeffel, Democrat and candidate for governor.
“Tom Corbett should come out in support of HB 300 and HB 745 today so that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens of Pennsylvania can have equal protection under the law.
HB 300, introduced by Rep. Dan Frankel (D- Allegheny County), would amend the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act to include “sexual orientation” and “gender identity or expression” as protected classes. If passed, this bill will prohibit discrimination on the bases of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression in housing, employment, and public accommodations.
HB 745, introduced by Rep. Josh Shapiro (D- Montgomery County), expands the definition of a hate crime to include crimes motivated by malicious intent toward an individual’s or group’s ancestry, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or gender or gender identity.
“More than 100 employers, including some of the largest corporations in Pennsylvania, have nondiscrimination policies that include sexual orientation and/or gender identity. It is time for Pennsylvania to join these corporations, many states and several Pennsylvania municipalities in banning discrimination against ALL citizens,” continued Hoeffel.
“Attorney General, Tom Corbett should be leading the charge to pass these important bills.”
“As governor, I will support legislation that prohibits discrimination against all Pennsylvanians, such as HB 300 and HB 745.” Hoeffel concluded. “To date, Mr. Corbett has been silent on this legislation and on his views on civil rights for all Pennsylvanians. I call on Tom Corbett to stand up to discrimination by announcing his support for these bills today.”
