Independent jumps into 7th District race
The contest for the 7th Congressional District got a little more crowded this weekend.
The Delaware County Daily Times reports that Jim Schneller, a former New York City worker who later worked as a marketing executive, will be running for the seat as an independent candidate. The newspaper described him as pro-life and fiscally conservative. While his politics would clearly align him with the Republican Party, the local GOP has worked to clear the field for former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan as it looks to win back the seat being left open by Democrat Joe Sestak.
“The huge debt that’s being taken on by our federal government, this is being mirrored in our state Legislature and it’s also happening in the local sector,” Schneller said. “It has just become obvious, really in the very short term, that this has been burgeoning and when Congress came into its 2009 session and started to issue trillions of dollars of no-string bailouts, I jumped to attention and started talking to friends and with community people, and nobody is happy about it.”
State Representative Bryan Lentz (D-Delaware), political consultant E. Teresa Touey and environmental lawyer Gail Conner are all seeking the Democratic nomination.

Questions:
1) Does Schneller need to change his registration from Republican in order to run as an Independent?
2) What is the petition signature requirement for Independent candidates? (It’s 1,000 for major party congressional candidates.)
3) Will we need more lifeguards with so many people jumping into the pool?

I used to be a lifeguard – I’d be happy to help!
