Doherty officially gets into guv race

Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty formally declared his candidacy for governor Tuesday, saying that the key to revitalizing Pennsylvania’s economy was in its urban centers and pledging to work on job creation.

“We’re a state that once built this nation, and we can be great again by reinvesting in these cities and towns,” Doherty told reporters on a conference call after announcing his run earlier in Scranton. “We took Scranton from a difficult situation and turned it around. I want to take the same passion and drive I’ve had for Scranton and take it to Harrisburg.”

Doherty enters a crowded Democratic primary field in a year when some Republican leaders are seeking to mobilize behind state Attorney General Tom Corbett in the hopes of recapturing the Governor’s Mansion. He acknowledged that he would be unable to match the fundraising of some candidates, but said he’d have “enough money to tell my story.”

Central to that story will be the turnaround in Scranton, which was near bankruptcy when he was elected mayor, and while it remains under the state’s economic-distress law, Act 47, he is widely credited for having improved the situation dramatically.

“For eight years we have worked to make Scranton a great place to raise a family,” he said earlier in front of a revitalized downtown site in Scranton, according to his remarks as prepared for delivery. “That has led to businesses moving here, local families starting small businesses here, and major developments like the one we stand before today.

“I took over a city that people had forgotten about,” he added on the conference call.

Doherty faces Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato, Auditor General Jack Wagner, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoffel and Philadelphia businessman Tom Knox in next year’s primary.

Undecided Dem from Allentown here. I wouldn’t call myself an “insider” but I run in insider circles. Any truth to a rumor that Doherty is getting a major union endorsement in the coming days in Philly? Anyway, seems like a good guy. I’d take him or Onorato.

Can someone please explain to me how it makes sense to run for mayor, be elected, and within hours of your election announce that you are seeking another office?

No wonder people are so sick of politicians.

Investing in places like Philadelphia, which has been ignored in the Rendell administration, would greatly improve the lives of most Pennsylvanians.

Doherty believes that investing in our urban centers is the key to revitalizing Pennsylvania’s economy. The biggest reason that Pennsylvania’s urban centers are decaying is violence.

Right now the City of Scranton has a public service announcement on it’s website for “Cage Fight 2″, which is to be held at Lackawanna College, and whose students seem to make the newpapers for all the wrong reasons.

Like dog fighting, I don’t think that cage fighting is legal in all fifty states.

Dominic Denaples, brother of Louis Denaples, is chairman of the board of Lackawanna College.

PJ, why any Union would endorse him after the way he has treated the Public Safety Unions in Scranton is beyond me. They do not understand the meaning of the word “Union” nor respect the people who built the unions. They too will get what they deserve from this “Demican”. God forgive them they do not know what they do.

    Gino:

He’s been a very union-friendly mayor. The Building Trades have always endorsed him, and I’m sure other unions have, too. The public safety unions in Scranton are notoriously greedy and wildly unpopular with the public (see mayoral elections of 2001, 2005, and 2009), and he stood up to their bull.

“God forgive them they do not know what they do”
-I implore you to seek psychiatric attention.

Really Ed? Union friendly? Those greedy and wildly unpopular with the public? Wow, you must read the Scranton Times. How wrong of them to want COLA’s. Every other employee received increases since 2002 (in violation of the Act 47 Recovery plan) except for Public Safety, how wrong of them to expect to be treated equally. Do a little research before you post information without the facts. Besides I think you have it wrong, They stood up to his Bull. Check how many times the “Unions” have won in the courts but yet Doherty fails to comply with the court awards. Soon the “Unions” shall be vindicated and it will be a glorious at the Hall.

    Gino–

I haven’t had a COLA increase either. Times are tough universally; public safety employees shouldn’t be immune from that. And, yes, you guys are greedy and the public does not sympathize with you…just look at the election results. All the public safety unions vehemently opposed Doherty in 2005 and 2009…how’d that work out for you?

I just did a little research on your post Gino. You can’t really justify the claim that Doherty hasn’t complied with court rulings when it seems like Doherty has gotten more rulings in his favor. The unions have also ignored those court rulings. It seems the unions also ignored the fact that their own peers voted against them getting these raises in a citywide election which is what the whole court proceedings stem from.

Scranton went into bankruptcy ages ago. It has been in bankruptcy all eight years of Doherty’s mayoralty. It is still in bankruptcy as he opts to get paid by taxpayers in this bankrupt city to run for another office. We already have seen this movie: the one where a Mayor takes over a bankrupt city, keeps the city in bankruptcy for eight years, and leaves the city in bankruptcy to run for a higher office. That Mayor was from Philadelphia. After 8 years as Governor, the former Mayor Rendell can proudly say that the city of Philadelphia is still in bankruptcy. He is trying to put the state there as well but he is not quite there yet.

The city of scranton is about to win a major court case for it’s taxpayers…..thanks to mayor doherty who wouldn’t buckle to those greedy public safety unions….many unions located in scranton area support doherty for the obvious reason…..he keeps them working! forget about the public saftey unions….they have been pilaging the scranton taxpayers for way to long. many people felt scranton need to stops these municipal unions long ago……chris doherty was the guy who took them on. scranton is about to win a historic case for it’s taxpayers.

The fact of the matter is Doherty has been terrible for Scranton. He has not created jobs but lost them. He has invested money in downtown, I mean ghost town, but businesses continue to leave. He has increased the city’s long term debt 10 fold to the point of over 300 million. He is NOT union friendly and has refused to even budge with the unions who CANNOT strike but given in to those who can. His cabinet is full of unqualified croonies that cause more harm than good. On second thought elect him governor and get him the heck out of Scranton.
