Backing Corbett, Cawley is first Lt. Gov. candidate to endorse a top-ticket choice

Candidates for Lieutenant Governor are usually loathe to pick favorites in the race for governor, wary of upsetting whoever emerges as the nominee and hurt their own chances of getting on the ticket.

But Bucks County Commissioner Jim Cawley is putting his cards on the table.

Cawley, one of many Republicans trying to get on the ticket as a nominee for Lt. Gov., threw his support behind state Attorney General Tom Corbett’s gubernatorial campaign Tuesday, making himself the first Lt. Gov. candidate from either party to pick a horse in the race. The endorsement was delivered in a joint statement with fellow County Commissioner Charles Martin.

But that’s not all. Clearly looking to curry favor with Corbett early, Cawley’s campaign isn’t even soliciting donations on its own Web site. Instead, the “Donate” page redirects visitors to Corbett’s Web site.

“The most helpful thing you can do to support me and the Republican party is to support, my friend, Tom Corbett’s campaign for Governor,” Cawley writes on his Web site. “His leadership as our Attorney General and his vision for Pennsylvania makes him the most qualified candidate to be the next Governor of Pennsylvania.”

In reality, there is less political risk for Cawley in making such a move than one might presume. Corbett is the only major GOP candidate from western Pennsylvania, and if one of the southeastern candidates win instead, Cawley would probably be out of luck based solely on geography, since party leaders look for a balanced ticket.

Still, the early endorsement was an unusual move.

“At a time when our state needs it most, Tom Corbett offers leadership, vision and a healthy dose of common sense,” Cawley and Martin said Tuesday. “He knows that Pennsylvania’s best days lie ahead and we believe that he is uniquely equipped to take us there. Tom has skills from both the private and public sectors. He will be vigilant by keeping an eye on the bottom line making sure that the people’s money is spent wisely. He will be passionate to change Pennsylvania for the better as only a lifelong resident with two children living in Pennsylvania can be. He will be committed to making Pennsylvania a place for all of our children and grandchildren to choose to live and raise a family.”

Apparently Cawley needs Corbett to make Pennsylvania “a place for all of our children and grandchildren to choose to live and raise a family”. Sounds appropriate. I don’t believe Cawley has a family of his own yet…and his wife lives in New York!

John, as a resident of Bucks, I’m sure you’ve seen all the good that Jim Cawley has done for the county. (Economic Development, Open Space preservation, maintaining low taxes, etc.) While I would hate to lose Jim as a Bucks Commissioner, I know he will be fantastic as a Lieutenant Governor.

And I know that Jim’s wife lives in Pennsylvania, not sure where you got the New York rumor from.

So his campaign strategy is now officially based on the idea of “I’m from the southeast, Corbett should pick me.” Instead of all this focus on balance between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, we should be focused more on having a qualified and capable Lt. Gov. Dauphin County Commissioner Nick Difrancesco has traveled around the state talking about his ideas to make the Lt. Gov. position more than just a cermonial position. Instead of being worried about balance on the ticket, we should be looking for a Lt. Gov. candidate who is willing to role up his sleeves and actually do something.

John, is the desire to have a safe environment contingent upon the desire to pro-create? To use that logic, people who may either choose not to have children, or are unable, are people who then, by your thinking, advocate unstable communities. Very odd thinking.

As for the allegation about his spouse, do you know that for certain? Additionally, the statutes require the CANDIDATE to reside in the Commonwealth.

John, you seem to be a product of our high tax, overated and under achieving public school system.

Bucks County Republicans are scurrying around trying to please the Corbett people with fundraisers, etc. to elevate Cawley for Lieutenant Governor like they did with Mark Schweiker. The inner circle chatter is that it’s not working this time as Carol Aichele has emerged with the most support from Southeast GOP leaders. This is an interesting race with some very good candidates. Aichele continues to be the frontrunner for the GOP endorsement.

Aichele is close, Watkins is breathing down her neck. It’s the capacity to get out the vote and reach new blood (and money) that is beginning to matter.

Cawley has a family, his wife lives in his house, and his son Nick does too! Wow shocker there John in Bucks. I thinks its amazing that the debate is where is his family is and not about how Jim Cawley has spearheaded tax dollar saving controlled spending in the court house. Or that he hasn’t allowed taxes to be raised since he has taken office. Lets talk policy not make personal attacks. Pennsylvania is better than that!
