Republicans lose on registration but win on issues

Very interesting item by Bill Galston in The New Republic about the state of play for 2010. Galston, hardly a conservative, notes the paradox that Republicans are down in voter approval but seem to be winning the issues, with the country generally moving in a conservative direction that the Democrats seem powerless to stop.

What any of this means for 2010—let alone 2012—is of course hard to predict.

In the middle of their first terms, Nixon and Reagan were in trouble, while the seemingly strongest early president, Bush 41, was ultimately defeated. But it’s nice to see a Democrat be honest about where the party is, and how different it all seems from a year ago.

The new NBC poll shows the generic Congressional ballot widening out from 3 points to an 8 point spread in favor of Democrats. Obama has recovered from his August teabagging to where he stood at the time of the 2008 Election, and Republicans are now at their most unpopular in 25 years – 2 points more unpopular than at any point during George Bush’s term. That means they’ve managed to piss off voters above and beyond what Bush can reasonably be blamed for. That disparity, I’m sure, would be even more glaring if NBC had released the results by region, revealing even their current pathetic standing to be propped up disproportionately by the South. In a recent Research 2000 poll, favorable attitudes toward the Republican Party in the Northeast were a comical 6%. There is a difference between the moderate Independents who are waiting to see if Obama can deliver and who want him to deliver on his promises. And then there is the Republican base who thinks Obama is a secret Kenyan Manchurian candidate bent on destroying America and hastening our capture by Islamo-CommuFascism. In other words, total nutsacks rotting the Party’s foundation. I wouldn’t exactly be breaking out the champagne.

I would never trust an NBC poll due to its ownership and how one sided they are in their reporting. This poll may have more credence if it was done by an independent and respected pollster. IE. Franklin Marshall would be a good choice for PA.
And I do not think that Obama has recovered in anyway. Especially on the national scene. Look at Virginia as an example – and they were enamored by Obama.
Pa in 2010 is going to become more balanced as well – in my opinion.
Visit http://www.Damian2010.com for an example of a candidate who is shaking up the 13th in a run against Schwartz. This and other races like this will be factors next year. When in the past they would not have been. That is because these are candidates that are offering the People a real voice and real change.
