Nutter to headline Pike fundraiser

Democrat Doug Pike is bringing in the City of Brotherly Love’s political heavyweight.

Pike, who is running for Congress in the 6th District, will hold a fundraiser next Monday in Philadelphia, headlined by the city’s own Mayor Michael Nutter.

Nutter isn’t quite as popular as when he came into office almost two years ago, but remains a potent draw for the Democratic donors in the region.

Gerlach: Budget mess was ‘a long time coming’

Congressman Jim Gerlach (R-6) on Monday called for a halt to the growth of state spending, describing Pennsylvania’s protracted budget impasse “a fundamental fight” between those who want to raise taxes and those who want to rein in spending.

“This was a long time coming because of the growth and spending at the state level,” Gerlach said on Pittsburgh’s WMNY Radio.

In attacking Corbett’s endorsement, Dems may have misfired

The state Democratic Party last week blasted Attorney General and GOP gubernatorial hopeful Tom Corbett for endorsing the Centre County District Attorney’s reelection bid. But in doing so, the party appears to have stretched the facts.

The attack Friday reflected a theme Democrats will increasingly be using as they seek to paint Corbett as ethically suspect for engaging in political activity while simultaneously working as one of the state’s top law enforcement officers— pBut the office itself is not under investigation, records and interviews show. Rather, it is one former assistant district attorney who is under scrutiny. Former prosecutor Lance Marshall resigned from the office late last year in the wake of accusations that he sent inappropriate text messages to a witness in a case. Under standard practice to avoid a conflict of interest, a href="http://wearecentralpa.com/content/fulltext/news?cid=54461" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http://wearecentralpa.com']);return TrackClick("http%3A%2F%2Fwearecentralpa.com%2Fcontent%2Ffulltext%2Fnews%3Fcid%3D54461','Madeira+referred+the+case+to+the+state+Attorney+General%22s+office')" target="_blank"Madeira referred the case to the state Attorney General’s office/a, which routinely handles investigations of local prosecutors./p
pMonths later, Corbett is planning to endorse Madeira’s reelection campaign, appears in his campaign literature and on a campaign a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/madeiraforda#play/all/uploads-all/2/0FKlRvXNG44" onclick="javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','outbound-article','http://www.youtube.com']);return TrackClick("http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fuser%2Fmadeiraforda%23play%2Fall%2Fuploads-all%2F2%2F0FKlRvXNG44','Web+video')" target="_blank">Web video

Red in a Sea of Blue chats with Rick Schenker

I had the opportunity last week to interview Rick Schenker, the former Erie County Executive and a Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor. I’ve condensed it down to some of the key points he made.

Enjoy!

On why he’s running:

“I looked at the Lt. Gov. position as one of two things—a public relations position for somebody who is looking to enhance their political future, or, from my perspective, a position of media influence to attract …
