NRCC, Congressional Quarterly Recognize Strength of Pat Meehan’s Candidacy

By PAT MEEHAN FOR CONGRESS

DREXEL HILL, PA – Pat Meehan, the Republican candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District, continued to build momentum for his campaign this week with strong recognition from the National Republican Campaign Committee and the widely respected Congressional Quarterly magazine.

Just six weeks after Meehan announced his candidacy, the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) named him yesterday to its “Young Guns” program, an organized effort to identify and support the best candidates for open Congressional seats and challengers to incumbents nationwide.  Being named to the program will help improve the national profile of his campaign and should provide a boost to Meehan’s fundraising efforts.

“The NRCC is committed to working with Pat Meehan as he continues to meet the rigorous goals of the Young Guns program,” said NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions. “With all that Pat Meehan has accomplished in just a few short months, I am confident that he will be successful in his effort to win this seat for Republicans and keep the Democrats accountable for their reckless anti-jobs agenda.”

“National party leadership and political pundits are sitting up and taking notice of the strength of Pat Meehan as a candidate,” said Pete Peterson, a spokesperson for the Meehan campaign.  “Pat Meehan’s background as a U.S. Attorney and his record of service within the 7th Congressional District make him a stand-out candidate that voters are going to rally behind.”

Also this week, Meehan received a boost from Congressional Quarterly, one of the nation’s most respected leaders in political journalism, which shifted its outlook for the race in the 7th District from “Leans Democratic” to “Tossup.” In its latest Politics Ratings update, the news organization stated that “Republicans scored big when former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan dropped out of the 2010 governor’s race to run for this seat… Sestak had the benefit of facing flawed Republicans in each of his races… Meehan appears a cut above as the likely GOP nominee for 2010.” (Source: CQ Politics, 10/23/009).

Another political publication, PRIsm Information Network also touted Meehan’s strength this week.  An article titled “PA-7: Competitive again” stated that “the PA-7 seat… is one of the districts that has to be rated as a Republican top-tier recruitment highlight.”  The article also notes that although “PA-7 was rated safely Democratic at the beginning of the election cycle, Sestak’s departure and Meehan’s arrival makes this a race to watch all the way to Election Day 2010….  It is seats like these that Republicans must win if they are to regain substantial strength in Congress.” (Source: PRIsm Information Network, 10/28/09)
