How Pat Meehan raked in some fast cash

How Pat Meehan raked in some fast cash

In seeking to quickly demonstrate the political potency of his Congressional bid, former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan tapped his extensive connections within the legal community, maxing out a large number of donors early as he took just 16 days to raise a sum that almost equaled what his likely Democratic opponent took several weeks to pile up.

Meehan, a Republican who had been planning to run for governor before opting for a House bid in the 7th District instead, raised about $211,000 during the third quarter, according to campaign finance data, compared to $220,000 raised by state Representative Bryan Lentz (D-Delaware) in the period.

A former Delaware County District Attorney and longtime political insider there, Meehan’s third quarter campaign finance report is peppered with the names of Philadelphia-area legal PACs and individual lawyers, including some from Conrad O’Brien, which he joined last year. And unlike Lentz, who built a larger network of smaller donors that he can go back to for more, Meehan took in the federally-mandated legal maximum of $4,800 ($2,400 a apiece for the primary and general elections) from more than two dozen donors, and maxed out even more donors for just the primary.

Such legal big-wigs as Cozen O’Connor president Thomas Decker and Conrad O’Brien founder William O’Brien are on the list. Underscoring Meehan’s support within the party establishment, state GOP chairman Rob Gleason gave Meehan’s campaign $2,400 and Pennsylvania Manufacturers’ Association president Frederick Anton kicked in $4,800.

“Pat is a tireless worker,” Meehan’s senior political adviser Vince Galko said in an interview. “He understands that you need to raise money and he knows how to sit down and make the fundraising calls.”

this was a fantastic piece of spin – trying to put a positive take on the fact that despite everyone saying he’s the favorite, he was outraised by Lentz…

Fantastic piece of spin is right. Let’s see if we can take the spin off the ball and get an objective look at what’s really there.

The list of donors that supposedly “shows the political potency of his congressional bid” really shows exactly how deeply rooted Meehan is in the Republican Machine and how beholden he is to the party bosses that pull the strings in Delaware County. The list is replete with law firms that do county and municipal work throughout Delco, lobbyists with ties to the Republican Machine, current and former Republican elected officials and even county employees (including the current D.A. whom one would think was elected to serve ALL the county’s residents, not just the Republican ones).

Nice to see Upper Darby Chairman and county Republican Boss John McNichol and his family so well represented. After all it was McNichol who pulled Meehan from obscurity, sprinkled pixy dust on him and turned him into a county prosecutor, despite the fact that Meehan had never tried a case of any kind, let alone ever actually prosecuted a criminal in his not-so-stellar legal career.

And look! There’s Joe Loeper. Nice to see those prosecuted by the US Attorney’s office (admittedly before Meehan’s tenure) have enough confidence in Pat to want to see him rise through the political ranks.

Some “extensive connections” and show of “political potency”! Looks like a pretty limited rolodex. The question is, on whose desk does the rolodex actually sit?

That is an excellent analysis – couldn’t have said it better myself. Anyone not sure what’s wrong with politics in Delco can get a pretty good understanding if they read Meehan’s campaign finance statement (And then compare it to the lists of county and municipal vendors and patronage employees, if you care to pry them out of the courthouse and 40 municipal offices.) It would make a great academic project, and it’s all there for the asking under the PA Open Records Act. You’ll find it’s all very, very cozy.

I just wish more of you with interesting things to say would drop the “anonymous” tag and say who you are. It carrys alot more weight when people know it’s coming from a real person with real experience with Delco politics. Don’t be scared. This is America – we have a little thing called the first amendment.

By the way, on the subject of our esteemed Delco District Attorney Mr. Green, does anyone else see the slightest bit of impropriety about his endorsement of Republican Machine Judicial Candidate Linda Cartisano, now being trumpeted in large newspaper ads? What with him being responsible for all of the criminal prosecutions that would come before her as a judge? Doesn’t that smack right up against the notion of equal justice under the law?

Fortunately the voters can avoid this whole conundrum by electing the very well qualified Nancy Rhoads Koons to the judgeship instead.

Hey Magician do you mean “cozy” like the democrat patronage job you have?

If I have a Democratic patronage job I wish they’d actually send me the checks. What are you referring to? Being a Borough Councilman? I was elected by a majority of the voters. We get paid $3,000 a year to manage the resources of 3,000 people. This time of year when you have to balance a budget on top of the usual issues and unforseen problems it becomes a essentially another full time job. Good luck getting that deal anywhere else. One more thing – we all sit there every 1st and 2nd Wednesday in front of the public and the press, and anyone can stand up and question us on anything they’re concerned about. And we answer them. If you want to be part of a legitimate debate, why don’t you start by saying who you are and what you are referring to?

    Mr. Magician
There needs to be some kind mystery left in the world. Don’t you watch WB 17. Even the guy that reveals the magician’s secrets is not identified. The other magicians would be mad. I’m not talking about your job as King of Morton Borough council. I’m asking about your job. The job that you do for a living. The democrat patronage job. What do you do for a living? When did you get the job? Who gave you the job?

I take it you mean Eastern Regional Director for the Pennsylvania Reources Council. You’re falsely suggesting that the Pennsylvania Resources Council is a government organization. It’s actually a 70 year old private, nonpartisan, nonprofit corporation dealing with Envronmental Education and Advocacy. None other than Ted Erickson was president of the organization in the 1990′s. We have members and a board of directors from all political stripes and from all over the state. Check your facts before you make a bigger fool of yourself.

The same way as everyone gets a job – by answering an ad and going through a series of interviews with a board commitee. To this day I know little about the politics of anyone on that committee. It’s not what the organization is about and it’s not talked about much. And for 70 years that’s resulted in a lot of talented people from all sides of the aisle working together on environmental conservation.

You mean the same way everyone gets a Democrat patronage job. Look I’m sure you are good at what you do and earn your paycheck. But if a republican held the job you would call it patronage and part of the “Republican Machine”. Just be consistent.

Your tortured logic has reached far past the point of insanity. Are we about finished here? Lets sum up: You’ve gone on your fishing expedition, been presented with factual evidence rebutting every one of your complaints, made a complete fool of yourself in the process, and proven yourself to be utterly speneless to boot, posting under your phony handle. I’ve given completely honest rebuttals to every one of your slanderous allegations, under my own name and for all the public to see. Now they can decide who to believe. I’m perfectly comfortable with where I stand.

    Goodbye.

For the 13th against Rep. Allyson Schwartz check out Damian Dachowski at: http://www.Damian2010.com
If you want to support Values and have a real voice in DC then support Damian with $25 or $50 to help him to get the message out. Or, maybe come to an event and see what everyone is talking about. He is personal and you can even give him a call. This is a candidate who truly wants to represent the 13th unlike his opponent Ms. Schwartz who is tied to corrupt PAC dollars and never returns calls. Let your VOICE be heard!
