Doherty to Onorato: Welcome to Philly

Doherty to Onorato: Welcome to Philly

So apparently Dan Onorato isn’t the only Democratic candidate for governor with an office in Philadelphia. Responding to the news that Onorato is formally opening his Philly office Thursday evening, Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty’s campaign sent pa2010.com Central this tongue-in-cheek welcome letter to the Allegheny County Executive.

We’ll refrain from asking the Onorato folks for comment—but if they wish to respond with their own enjoyably glib letter, we’ll of course publish it in full.

Check out the Doherty campaign’s full letter below:

Dear Mr. Onorato,

Welcome to Philadelphia!

We read about your new office in Philly opening soon and since we opened our Philadelphia office back in September, we just wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood.

A couple of important highlights:

1)  For lunch DiBruno Brothers is really good and it’s right around the corner from you.  Great sandwiches and the upstairs café has a terrific menu.

2)  You’re new, so you’ll have to decide for yourself, but we like Jim’s Steaks on South Street.  Although, when you’re talking about meat and cheese on a roll, how can you really go wrong?

3)  It’s spelled Passyunk, so you might be tempted to say “passy-unk,” but it’s pronounced “Pash-yunk.”

4)  Baseball is still being played here.  You probably switched to football a while ago, but don’t be surprised when you see a bunch of excited people running around in red and white.

Like we said, our office is up and running and has been since last month.  We’re not too far away, just over on Walnut between Broad and 15th, so stop by any time.

Best of luck!

Corey, Mark, Nicole, and the rest of the Doherty for Pennsylvania campaign team

Haha! Nicely done by Doherty. Onorato shouldn’t underestimate him.

It’s nice that they both have offices.

However, it’s less than 2 weeks from the 2009 elections. I hope that these (and the other 2010) candidates release their unpaid volunteers to help the local and statewide 2009 candidates.

They have 6 months to bore us and beg for our help, but two weeks to show they are team players interested in the strength of their party and their grassroots organizers.

Frankly, any 2010 candidate or campaign caught handing out 2010 literature at the 2009 polls should be taken out and ***insert appropriate punishment***. Make note of these candidates and remind them of their selfish behavior when they come looking for your help for petitions and canvassing.
2009 candidates and committee people should be calling these 2010 candidates and getting volunteers and volunteer lists.
Based upon the level of support we get NOW, we should factor this into any candidate claims of party loyalty next year.

    third tier candidate………. next

interesting that a “third tier candidate” has an office in philly before the dinos from pittsburgh.
imo, onorato is the favorite, and doherty or hoeffel can make some noise if they catch on…which is totally possible. maybe jack wagner will start campaigning the week before the primary but not much sooner.

Congratulations on opening the office first. You get a medal… but wont come close to the nomination.

    WestDem-
Onorato certainly has the advantage of Rendell’s backing/money behind him.

But, I have to say, except for Joe Hoeffel, I have NO idea who these candidates are or their track records. A good friend of mine did say some nice things about Doherty six months ago, but no details really stood out.

As an active PA Dem, I’m looking to be “courted” at events and see which one is really a good PARTY Dem and not a DINO.

In PA politics you never know what skeleton (eg: Fumo relationship) someone is going to have.

I’m not interested in a Rendell clone.

If the taxing baboon onorato is the Dem nominee, I’ll vote republican or skip the race entirely.

Jack Wagner is also the one who can win this race. Everyone knows Jack. They r the 2 first tier candidates, then id list hoeffel… then doherty then knox. Am i missing anyone? I think right now Wagner and Onorato are the closest to Corbett… im going to try to find that link.

Do people automatically get dubbed a DINO… if they are pro-life? Asking curiously… because if thats the case then i imagine thats goes against alot of the folks from pittsburgh and scranton. Can any SE PA people elaborate on this?

First of all — THIS is hilarious: “Baseball is still being played here. You probably switched to football a while ago, but don’t be surprised when you see a bunch of excited people running around in red and white.” All in good fun.

Second of all, I don’t think it’s fair to consider either Wagner or Onorato “DINOs.” Onorato is clearly in the Rendell mold, and despite being pro-life, Wagner has always been a strong labor guy, and has a solid history in the party.

Face it, there are a lot of pro-lifers in the Pennsylvania Democratic Party (even in SE PA) — it is simply not a litmus test issue here. The party needs to continue being a big tent — especially considering that the PA GOP is basically a pup tent at this point.

Yeah flynnbw… we have a winning tradition in football and drink our beers in the can out here. Im sure Daughtery’s envious. There is only one city of champions in Pennsylvania (wink wink)

I think DINO is a strong term. If you want to be a Democrat, welcome to the party, regardless of your beliefs.

That said, I think a lot of Democrats from around the state will have to ask themselves if Onorato and Wagner – pro-life, pro-gun, questionable on LGBT – share their values. Maybe they do, maybe they don’t, but it’s certainly a legitimate question.

Onorato’s name is almost unknown by everyone up here, except those of us interested in politics and follow it like others follow sports. Even then, we don’t know much.

    I am a Republican though.

Yep, they meet my values… in all of those areas.

Gary DiBileo formally announced his write-in candidacy for the job of Scranton Mayor on Thursday.

I guess he was giving Doherty a welcome of sorts also, welcome back to Scranton politics !!!

    Hey Philly………

Hope you guys like O. Maybe yunz can get a taste of what we have been goin through over here in the West. The guys a bum. I’m gonna go drink my Iron City that I bought in Westmorelnd County so I dont have to pay my drink tax to the bus drivers.

Thanks “O” for all the memories and good luck with the election. We cant wait to see you get the hell out of Allegheny County.

I’m registered independent but will register D to vote in the primary next spring. All I know so far is that I’m NOT voting for Wagner. Have you seen his AudGen reports over the last year? Sex offenders need more monitoring, welfare queens are ripping off the state, veterans need more assistance. He’s been using the office to score cheap political points. Progressive Democrats are smarter than that….I hope.
