Callahan camp says it raised $345K
Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan appears to have stormed out of the gate in his bid to unseat Congressman Charlie Dent (R-15), with his campaign saying Wednesday that it had racked up about $345,000 since he entered the race in July.
Callahan is widely considered the strongest Democrat to take on Dent so far, and his early fundraising totals would seem to solidify that perception. The campaign said it had about $325,000 on hand at the close of the third quarter. In recent cycles, Dent has been challenged by significantly underfunded candidates.
Neither Callahan’s third quarter campaign finance report nor Dent’s had been published online as of late Wednesday morning. But The Morning Call reported that Dent is expected to raise more than $230,000 this quarter, after finishing last quarter with about $337,000 on hand.
Callahan’s candidacy, spurred by encouragement from senior Democrats including Vice President Joe Biden, made the race one of the most competitive in Pennsylvania in the eyes of many political forecasters.

This is so rad. Callahan is a great mayor and will be a booming voice for sustainability and brownfield economic redevelopment issues in Congress. It’s sad such a talented public official will leave our city for Washington, but that’s what the farm team is for isn’t it?
