Specter keeps piling on the insider support

The Democratic insiders continue to line up behind Arlen Specter.

Almost five months after the longtime Senator switched parties, more than 200 party leaders and elected officials have joined Specter’s advisory committee, the campaign announced Tuesday. The latest 63 additions include former state Senator Connie Williams, a fixture in Montgomery County Democratic politics.

“Last Tuesday, I was proud to see President Obama come out strongly for Senator Specter,” Williams said in a statement from the campaign. “Like the President, I will put forth my best efforts to ensure Sen. Specter’s victory next year. He is the partner that Pennsylvania needs in the U.S. Senate.”

Specter Advisory Committee Tops 200 Members

Harrisburg — Senator Arlen Specter today announced 63 new members of his Statewide Advisory Committee, formed to assist in his campaign for the 2010 Democratic nomination to the U.S. Senate.

The Specter Advisory Committee now boasts 215 Democratic leaders from across the State.

Referring to his successful fundraising reception with the President last week, Specter said, “Although it’s great to have President Obama on my side, I’m equally as excited to have the support of these excellent rank and file Democratic leaders. They have worked hard for our Party and I am pleased they will be working hard on my behalf.”

Former State Senator Connie Williams, a new addition to the Advisory Committee, stated, “Last Tuesday, I was proud to see President Obama come out strongly for Senator Specter.  Like the President, I will put forth my best efforts to ensure Sen. Specter’s victory next year.  He is the partner that Pennsylvania needs in the U.S. Senate.”

    Notably absent: Delaware County
Reason: fear of retaliation by Sestak

In Connecticut in 2006, Lieberman had undivided party support in the primary as well, and Democratic voters still beat him in the primary. Ultimately, endorsements don’t mean anything if people have no confidence that the candidate can be trusted to deliver what they want. Democrats still have no reason to believe Specter will continue to be a solid Democratic vote after the primary. Literally nothing he can do will provide assurance of that outcome.

The last time this many party insiders lined up behind a candidate was last year. With Hillary Clinton.

    -Jon,

typically for starters, people get endorsements because people do have confidence. In Specter’s case, he obviously has clout in DC, whereas Sestak dims in comparison.

I think there is a variation now on what is good for Pennsylvania vs. what is good for Sestak. Sestak is clearly missing the picture.

    Drew-
I seem to remember Hillary winning PA by 10 points.

(And unless I’m mistaken, Joe Sestak was one of those “insiders.”)

    John–

I seem to remember alot of those Clinton insiders myself. I see alot of familiar names on Sen. Specters list, which doesnt bode well for Joe. Perhaps Joe was an insider then, but after drinking beer now and being Pat Toomey’s pal… Sestak is on the outside looking in.

It’s not well known, but Obama WON Delaware County over Hillary in the primary.

Joe was more of a lackey than an insider. The Clintons had him flying all over the country like an errand boy.
