Meehan set to announce Congressional bid Monday
Former U.S. Attorney Pat Meehan seems ready to announce his run for Congress on Monday, with a series of events across the 7th District that are being billed as a “major campaign announcement.”
Meehan, who was preparing a run for governor before signaling last month that he would step aside in favor of state Attorney General Tom Corbett, has been considered a lock to enter the race for Democrat Joe Sestak’s seat ever since he said he was “seriously considering” it in early August. On Monday, he will visit Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties, which make up the district. The day will start with a morning event at his house in Drexel Hill.
Businessman Steven Welch is also running for the GOP nomination, but is reportedly being pushed by some Republican leaders to run in the 6th District instead. Delaware County Republican leader Tom Judge recently told pa2010.com that Meehan, a former county District Attorney, has the “inside track” on the race.
State Representative Bryan Lentz (D-Delaware) is running for the Democratic nomination, and state Representative Greg Vitali (D-Delaware) is also considering the race.

Meehan should think twice. His opponent, Bryan Lentz, is an Iraq war veteran and former tough on crime prosecutor. I think Lentz is pretty much the favorite in this race.

Meehan has the strong support of the local GOP organizations. He will be endorsed by them and will have a big advantage in the Primary against any opponent. There continues to be a very serious and focused effort locally by the GOP to recruit Welch for the Gerlach seat. The Southeastern GOP leaders view Meehan and Welch running in neighboring districts as a win-win for everyone in 2010, which is emerging as a much better political environment in the suburbs than ’06 and ’08.

The Dem/Rep ratio is improving for the Dems. In Delaware county, the Dems will reach parity within the next two years, possibly in one year if there is a massive voter registration push and depending upon which party as the more compelling primary.
The election will hinge a lot upon how the country is feeling about Obama and the congressional Democrats. If the economy gets stronger AND the job numbers are doing very well, the voters will give the Dems credit. That will outweigh all other considerations for most of the voters.
