Meehan and Welch: Nothing but nice things to say
Steven Welch is “very impressive.” So says Pat Meehan.
Pat Meehan is a “good-government guy.” So says Steven Welch.
If there’s any enmity between Welch and Meehan after the former ditched his 7th Congressional district aspirations for the latter, neither candidate is showing a hint. By all accounts, Welch and Meehan already had a good relationship before Meehan signaled his interest in the race, prompting Welch, at the behest of GOP leaders, to run for the 6th District seat instead. And in separate interviews Monday, both had nothing but kind words for the other.
“I think the world of Pat,” Welch told pa2010.com. “I was one of the very first people to support pat for governor because I think he’s a good-government guy. I think he’ll be in a position to win the 7thh seat.”
Meehan sang a similar tune.
“Steven Welch is a very impressive young man who has created jobs and has a refreshing approach to issues of the economy,” he told reporters in Drexel Hill. “I was impressed with many of the things that Steve said.”
And if there’s one talking point the two men share to a tee, it’s the need for Republicans to win both seats next November.
“This has never been about me,” Welch said. “I’m very concerned about the path of the country. We’re on a path toward fiscal insolvency if we don’t turn it around.”
Said Meehan: “We’re going to have a great candidate with him in the 6th Congressional District.”
Before Welch made the switch last weekend and Meehan announced his candidacy Monday, the two met personally to talk it over. And while neither would go into many specifics about the substance of that meeting, Meehan framed the outcome as mutually beneficial.
“We were looking for a way … to put forward candidates that we think would stand for fiscal accountability accountability, responsibility, and care again about creating jobs,” he said.
In the end, both get to run for something.
